Description
Position Title: Detroit Early Middle College Science Teacher
Funding Source: General Fund
Reports to: This position reports to and is evaluated by the School Principal
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Science Education, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Integrated Science, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certification with one of the following high school science endorsements appropriate to assigned content:
    • DI - Integrated Science (6-12)
    • DA - Biology (6-12)
    • DX - Chemistry (6-12)
    • DP - Physics (6-12)
  • Previous high school teaching experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of adolescent development, science pedagogy, inquiry-based instruction, and laboratory safety.
  • Experience supporting college readiness, dual enrollment, or Early Middle College coursework is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with instructional technology, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and lab-based digital tools.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, student-centered, and academically rigorous learning environment.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic educational environment and contribute positively to school culture.

Position Description: Detroit Early Middle College is seeking a passionate and dedicated High School Science Teacher to join our innovative instructional team. The ideal candidate will be committed to cultivating scientific curiosity, critical thinking, and college readiness among scholars. As a High School Science Teacher in an Early Middle College environment, you will help students meet high-level academic expectations while preparing them for postsecondary coursework and STEM-related pathways.
Physical Requirements: Light Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects; Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling.
Terms of Employment: Salary & benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. The salary range for certified teachers starts at $51,300. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the School Principal in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement rigorous, inquiry-based science lessons aligned with Detroit Early Middle College curriculum, the Michigan Science Standards, and college readiness expectations.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that supports collaboration, scientific exploration, and respect for diverse perspectives.
  • Tailor instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including those enrolled in advanced and dual enrollment science coursework.
  • Regularly assess student understanding using formative and summative assessments and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to support student growth in scientific reasoning, lab skills, and conceptual understanding.
  • Maintain safe, organized laboratory environments and ensure adherence to all safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and Early Middle College partners to support academic planning, STEM readiness, and pathway development.
  • Engage in the teaching and learning cycle by analyzing data, developing instructional action plans, delivering re-teach lessons, and reflecting on instructional effectiveness.
  • Support and implement specialized student plans, including IEPs, 504 Plans, and behavior plans.
  • Participate in professional development to deepen content knowledge and strengthen science instructional practices.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, classroom expectations, and academic needs.
  • Contribute to a school culture rooted in high expectations, teamwork, respect, and continuous improvement.
  • Follow district and school policies, expectations, and protocols as outlined in district and school handbooks.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Strong understanding of secondary science curriculum and inquiry-based instructional strategies.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety, procedures, and science equipment use.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with digital tools for instruction, assessment, and communication (Microsoft Office, Google Suite, simulations, LMS platforms).
