As a Custodian, you will:
  • Perform routine work in cleaning and general upkeep of academic buildings such as offices, halls, conference rooms, classrooms, restrooms, and locker and shower rooms.
  • Scrub, strip, refinish, and polish floors using heavy industrial-type powered scrubbing and buffing machines.
  • Vacuum and clean carpets using industrial-type vacuum cleaners and carpet extractors.
  • Mix cleaning solutions per instructions.
  • Collect and dispose of refuse.
  • Remove snow and ice from the steps of the building area(s).
  • Move objects weighing 50 pounds or more, such as furniture, tables, and chairs, for special events.
  • Must be able to work at either City or East Campus.

Custodians may be hired at a higher level depending on a candidate's qualifications. Higher-level positions may also:
  • Train and oversee the work of others.
  • Work on-call hours.
  • Use non-riding and non-autonomous equipment.
  • Operate and program riding equipment.
  • Order supplies.

* Continuous supervision and specific guidance for training and development will be provided to Custodian I level positions, and Custodian II, III, or IV will be regularly assessed to ensure the appropriate level and advancement through routine performance of the skills associated with each level.

Minimum Required Qualifications
Custodian I, II, III, IV:
  • Eighth grade education required.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to understand cleaning chemicals and their application and dilution ratios.
  • Ability to gain knowledge and skills to operate large cleaning equipment.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Custodian II, III, IV:
  • 6+ months experience in a custodial position.
  • Ability to effectively read and interpret the custodial map.
  • Assessed in deemed proficient in the minimum number of skills from the custodial ladder program.

Preferred Qualifications
Custodian I:
  • Prior custodial experience preferred.
