What is full-time employment?

Full-time employment hours are generally determined by the employer. There is no single universal definition; however, various laws and policies govern different types of eligibility and statuses. For example, the Fair Labor Standards Act does not define full-time employment but does require overtime pay after 40 hours of work in a workweek for non-exempt employees. The Affordable Care Act, in determining Applicable Large Employers, defines full-time employees as those working an average of at least 30 hours per week, or 130 hours a month. The H-1B Visa Program defines full-time as 40 hours per week, normally, and in no event would less than 35 hours per week be considered to be full-time employment. In practice, full-time employment is typically between 32 and 40 hours per week.

What does it mean to work a full-time job?

A full-time job typically refers to a position where an employee works a standard number of hours set by their employer, usually around 35 to 40 hours per week. Full-time employees often receive benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, and retirement plan options, which may not be available to part-time workers. The exact definition of full-time can vary by company and country, but it generally signifies a long-term, regular commitment to the employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full-time employee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a full-time employee, you need a strong work ethic, time management skills, and relevant job-specific qualifications or education. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, productivity software, or certifications related to your role is often expected. Reliability, adaptability, and effective communication are critical soft skills that help you excel in team environments. These skills and qualities are important for consistently meeting job expectations, contributing to organizational goals, and advancing your career.

What are some common challenges professionals face when transitioning to a full-time role from part-time or contract work?

Transitioning to a full-time position often involves adapting to a more structured schedule, increased workload, and higher expectations for long-term commitment and team collaboration. Full-time roles typically require deeper integration into company culture and more involvement in ongoing projects, which can be a significant adjustment for those used to flexible or project-based work. Additionally, full-time employees may encounter new responsibilities such as regular meetings, performance reviews, and opportunities for professional development within the organization.

This is a great opportunity for college students, recent graduates, young professionals, and anyone with a strong sense of responsibility who wants to grow in work ethic, leadership, communication, and service.
We are looking for someone who is dependable, teachable, mature, and ready to take ownership of their work. A great Team Member at Bigham’s has a positive attitude, communicates clearly, pays attention to details, and takes pride in doing things the right way.
This role is fast-paced, hands-on, and team-focused. You will help prepare and serve food that looks great, tastes great, and meets Bigham’s standards every time. You will also help keep the restaurant clean, organized, and welcoming for our guests.
At Bigham’s, we value Excellence, Consistency, Loyalty, and Service. These values guide how we work, how we treat each other, and how we serve our community. We are especially drawn to people who value integrity, humility, hard work, service, and being part of a team with a purpose.
What You’ll Do
As a Full-Time Team Member, you will:
  • Work with a team-first attitude
  • Communicate clearly, respectfully, and often
  • Prepare and serve food according to Bigham’s standards
  • Build plates accurately and with attention to detail
  • Keep your station clean, organized, and ready for service
  • Follow food safety, health, and cleanliness standards throughout the shift
  • Help with dishes, cleaning, restocking, and other tasks as needed
  • Run food to guests and interact with customers in a friendly and helpful way
  • Stay flexible and willing to help wherever the team needs you
  • Slow down when needed to make sure the job is done right
  • Take ownership of your role and look for ways to serve the team
  • Represent Bigham’s with a positive attitude and a spirit of service
What We’re Looking For
A strong candidate is someone who is:
  • Dependable and ready to show up prepared to work
  • Mature, responsible, and able to take ownership
  • Teachable and open to feedback
  • Positive, respectful, and team-oriented
  • Detail-oriented and willing to follow standards
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to communicate well with teammates and guests
  • Able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks at once
  • Able to stand for several hours at a time
  • Able to lift, carry, or pull heavy objects when needed
  • Willing to complete or maintain a Food Handler’s Certification
Schedule
We are looking for someone who is able to work in the winter months. Preferably someone local to Lubbock, TX.
This is a full-time position. Hours may vary based on restaurant needs and availability. Daytime, evening, and weekend availability is preferred.
This role may be a good fit for college students with flexible schedules, recent graduates, or anyone looking for steady full-time work in a values-driven, team-focused environment.
Why Work at Bigham’s?
At Bigham’s, you will learn more than how to serve great BBQ. You will grow in responsibility, communication, teamwork, consistency, and serving people well.
We want Team Members who care about their work, care about people, and want to be part of a workplace built around family, service, integrity, and strong values.
If you are looking for full-time work where you can grow, work hard, build good habits, and be part of a team that feels like family, we would love for you to apply.
