What is a full time welder?

Full time welders are skilled tradespeople who join metal parts together using various welding techniques and equipment, working as their primary occupation and typically for at least 40 hours per week. They work in industries such as construction, manufacturing, shipbuilding, and automotive repair. Full time welders are responsible for reading blueprints, preparing surfaces, selecting appropriate welding methods, and ensuring the quality and safety of their work. Their roles may also include maintaining equipment and adhering to safety procedures to prevent accidents and injuries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time welder?

To thrive as a Full Time Welder, you need strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of welding techniques, often supported by a high school diploma or technical training. Proficiency in using welding equipment such as MIG, TIG, and arc welders, along with certifications like AWS Certified Welder, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, teamwork, and a commitment to safety help welders excel in diverse work environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing high-quality welds, maintaining workplace safety, and meeting project specifications reliably.

What are some common challenges welders face when working on large-scale construction projects?

Welders on large-scale construction projects often encounter challenges such as working in confined or elevated spaces, dealing with varying weather conditions, and adhering to strict safety protocols. Coordinating with other trades and teams is also crucial, as schedules can change rapidly, requiring flexibility and strong communication skills. Additionally, maintaining consistent weld quality over long shifts and ensuring compliance with project specifications are ongoing demands in this environment.

What is the difference between Full Time Welder vs Part Time Welder?

AspectFull Time WelderPart Time Welder
Work HoursTypically 40+ hours per weekFewer hours, often flexible
CertificationsRequired for various welding techniquesSame certifications as full-time, but may vary based on hours
Work EnvironmentFactories, construction sites, manufacturing plantsSimilar environments, but less consistent
Employment TypeFull-time, benefits usually includedPart-time, limited or no benefits

Full Time Welders work regular, full-week hours with benefits, often in manufacturing or construction. Part Time Welders work fewer hours, offering more flexibility but typically with limited benefits. Both roles require similar skills and certifications, but the employment structure differs significantly.

How much do full-time welders make a year?

Full-time welders typically earn an average annual salary ranging from $40,000 to $60,000, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Skilled welders with certifications such as AWS or ASME may earn higher wages, especially in specialized industries or high-demand regions.

Job description

TIG and Laser Welder

Department: Manufacturing / Production

Employment Type: Full-Time

Location: Houston, TX

The Mission

We are looking for a TIG and Laser Welder who understands that the weld is the seal. At Lunar Resources, welding is not a downstream step - it is a critical process in the manufacture of high-reliability electromechanical assemblies that operate in demanding environments. Our welds close hermetic packages, join dissimilar metals, and have to hold under conditions that leave no margin for defects. If you take pride in a clean, repeatable weld and you understand why it matters, we want to hear from you.

About the Role

You will perform precision TIG and laser welding operations on small-scale, tight-tolerance assemblies including Kovar, stainless steel, copper, and dissimilar metal joints. Much of this work supports UHV hermetic sealing - meaning leak integrity and weld quality are primary, and there are no cosmetic excuses for a structurally compromised joint.

This role is open to candidates across experience levels. What matters most is precision, process discipline, and the ability to execute consistently on difficult welds.

What You'll Do

  • Perform precision TIG welding on thin-wall tubing, flanges, and small electromechanical assemblies across a range of alloys including stainless steel, Kovar, and copper
  • Operate laser welding systems for hermetic seam and spot-welding applications, including fixturing and parameter setup
  • Weld dissimilar metal combinations with attention to joint design, heat input, and metallurgical compatibility
  • Set up and qualify weld parameters for new joints and geometries, documenting settings for repeatable production use
  • Inspect welds visually and dimensionally, support leak testing and process verification activities
  • Maintain welding equipment, optics, wire feeds, and shielding gas systems in ready condition
  • Collaborate with engineers to develop and refine welding procedures for new assemblies
  • Maintain traceability documentation and weld logs for all production work
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical production milestones
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

What We're Looking For

  • Demonstrated TIG welding skill on thin-wall, precision, or small-scale assemblies - this is not structural or pipe welding
  • Experience welding stainless steel and at least one other alloy in our stack (Kovar, copper, Inconel, or similar)
  • Ability to weld dissimilar metal joints and understand the challenges involved
  • Laser welding experience is a strong plus; candidates with strong TIG backgrounds and mechanical aptitude will be considered for cross-training
  • Comfort reading engineering drawings, weld symbols, and process travelers
  • Steady hands, patience, and an honest relationship with quality - you know the difference between a weld that looks good and one that is good
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Bonus

  • Experience with hermetic sealing processes or vacuum-compatible assemblies
  • Familiarity with AWS D17.1, MIL-W-8604, or similar aerospace/high-reliability welding standards
  • CWI certification or AWS certification in relevant processes
  • Prior work in a cleanroom-adjacent or contamination-controlled environment
Employment Type: FULL_TIME
