Job description

Position Summary

Provides professional nursing care for patients in labor, delivery, postpartum, and nursery units according to established procedures.

Position Accountabilities

Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.

Documents initial nursing histories, assesses patient's conditions and develops individual care plans for patients assigned to the unit.

Oversees the delivery of patient care for a group of patients; directs and delegates patient care assignments to nursing staff working on the floor based on acuteness of patient care needs and staff availability.

Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.

Administers and controls narcotics and medications.

Maintains a safe comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards.

Assists providers with examinations, procedures, and other processes related to direct patient care.

Demonstrates sensitivity to patient's comfort and privacy.

Observes emotional stability of patients, expresses interest in their progress and prepares for continuing care after discharge.

Maintains patient records and charts to ensure an accurate record of the patient's medical treatment.

Responds to code calls and directs codes when no physician is available.

Assists other members of the nursing team and/or disciplines.

Provides health care instruction to patient and family members.

Establishes and maintains communications between the nursing unit and ancillary departments for the purpose of problems solving. Utilizes appropriate lines of communication within the nursing departments.

Assist providers and aids with patients and families as needed in times of stress or crisis.

Arranges for patient's ordered diagnostic and therapeutic services.

Orients, instructs, and trains assigned personnel.

Assists in formulating and screening Quality Assurance criteria and providing in-service training for staff.

Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.

Attends meetings as required.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
