What is a full time veterinarian?

Full time veterinarians are licensed medical professionals who diagnose, treat, and help prevent diseases and injuries in animals. They work in veterinary clinics, hospitals, animal shelters, or research facilities, typically working 40 hours or more per week. Their responsibilities include performing surgeries, prescribing medications, advising pet owners on proper care, and sometimes supervising veterinary technicians and assistants. Full time veterinarians may also provide emergency care and participate in public health or research projects related to animal health.

What does a full time veterinarian do?

A typical day for a full-time veterinarian in a small animal clinic involves a mix of scheduled appointments, emergency cases, and performing routine surgeries or procedures. Veterinarians often start their day reviewing patient records, consulting with veterinary technicians, and examining pets for wellness checks, vaccinations, or illnesses. Throughout the day, they may perform diagnostic tests, write treatment plans, and communicate with pet owners about care instructions. Collaboration with a team of technicians, assistants, and sometimes specialists is common, ensuring patients receive comprehensive care. The role can be fast-paced and requires strong organizational and communication skills to balance clinical, administrative, and client-facing tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time veterinarian?

To thrive as a Full Time Veterinarian, you need a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, a valid veterinary license, and a solid foundation in animal anatomy, diagnostics, and treatment protocols. Familiarity with veterinary practice management software, laboratory equipment, and radiology systems is typically required. Strong communication, compassion, and problem-solving abilities are essential for client interactions and team collaboration. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering high-quality animal care, building client trust, and ensuring the efficient operation of a veterinary practice.

What is the difference between Full Time Veterinary vs Part Time Veterinary?

AspectFull Time VeterinaryPart Time Veterinary

What jobs can I do if I love animals?

If you love animals and are interested in a full-time veterinary career, you can work as a veterinarian, veterinary technician, or veterinary assistant. These roles involve diagnosing, treating, and caring for animals, often requiring relevant certifications or degrees. Other related jobs include animal behaviorist, zoo keeper, or pet trainer, which may also suit animal enthusiasts.

Why are so many full time veterinarians quitting?

Full-time veterinarians often leave the profession due to high workload, emotional stress from client interactions and patient outcomes, and burnout from long hours and administrative tasks. The demanding nature of the job and limited work-life balance contribute to the high turnover rate in the field.

Job description

Overview
Experienced Veterinarian | Two Locations, One Team | $60K Signing Bonus
Two hospitals. One collaborative team. More variety in your day.
Timbercrest Veterinary Services is seeking an experienced veterinarian to join our team and provide care across our sister hospitals in Atlanta and Lincoln, Illinois.
This is a unique opportunity for a veterinarian who enjoys variety in general practice, values strong client relationships, and likes sharing their experience with colleagues. You'll be part of one collaborative veterinary team while getting the variety of practicing in two established community hospitals.
Both full-time and part-time schedules will be considered, with a $60,000 signing bonus package available for eligible full-time veterinarians.
Quick Snapshot
  • Full-time or part-time opportunity
  • Practice across sister hospitals in Atlanta and Lincoln
  • Collaborative 3-DVM team
  • Experienced veterinarian with an interest in mentorship preferred
  • Mix of wellness, sick visits, surgery, and dentistry
  • Flexible scheduling with some Saturdays
  • Strong technician and support staff
  • Established client relationships
  • Digital radiology, ultrasound, and in-house diagnostics
  • $60K signing bonus package for eligible full-time veterinarians

One Team. Two Hospitals.
Practicing across our Atlanta and Lincoln locations gives you the opportunity to enjoy more variety while remaining part of one veterinary team.
Both hospitals serve established client communities, giving you the chance to build long-term relationships with clients and patients while experiencing a broader mix of cases and day-to-day practice.
You'll work alongside experienced veterinary professionals and skilled support staff who help keep the clinical day moving efficiently.
We value:
  • Thoughtful appointment pacing
  • Collaborative case discussions
  • Clinical autonomy
  • Reliable technician support
  • Strong client communication
  • Predictable scheduling
  • Teamwork across both locations

Rather than practicing in isolation, you'll have colleagues to collaborate with, share cases with, and support when another perspective is helpful.
Bring Your Experience. Help Others Grow.
We're especially interested in an experienced veterinarian who enjoys sharing their knowledge and helping other team members continue developing clinically.
That could mean discussing an interesting case, offering another perspective, helping a colleague build confidence with a procedure, or simply being an experienced resource when questions arise.
This isn't a formal leadership position. It's an opportunity to bring the experience you've already built to a collaborative team where your knowledge and perspective will be valued.
Clinical Capabilities
Across the Timbercrest hospitals, you'll have access to resources that support efficient, comprehensive patient care, including:
  • Digital radiology
  • Ultrasound
  • In-house blood analyzers
  • Electronic medical records
  • Experienced clinical support staff

You'll have the autonomy to practice medicine confidently while still having an experienced team available for collaboration.
Who We're Looking For
This opportunity could be a great fit for an experienced veterinarian who:
  • Enjoys the variety of practicing across two community hospitals
  • Values clinical autonomy and collaboration
  • Likes sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues
  • Enjoys building long-term client relationships
  • Is comfortable with general practice medicine
  • Appreciates experienced technician support
  • Wants the flexibility of a full-time or part-time schedule

Pay Range
For full-time veterinarians, the base salary range for this position is $100,000-$130,000, based on experience, plus production opportunities with no negative accrual.
Full-time veterinarians are also eligible for a $60,000 signing bonus package.
Part-time compensation will be based on schedule, experience, and agreed-upon hours.
Life in Lincoln & Atlanta
Located in central Illinois, Lincoln and Atlanta offer small-town living with convenient access to larger communities.
You'll enjoy:
  • Affordable cost of living
  • Short commutes
  • Local parks, restaurants, and community events
  • Convenient access to Springfield and Bloomington
  • A relaxed pace of life with larger-city amenities within reach

CareVet Offers You:
  • Competitive six-figure base salary plus production
  • No negative accrual
  • 1:1 personalized career coaching
  • Lucrative bonus packages
  • Flexible scheduling
  • "True" paid time off (base and production)
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • 100% paid life and disability insurance
  • Generous pet care perks
  • Access to a financial planning platform
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Paid time and allowance for professional development
  • Access to our doctor vacation program
