Job description

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks a Med Tech Manager to lead operations within the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory in the Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC). This position combines technical expertise in anatomic pathology with leadership responsibilities that include overseeing laboratory operations, managing staff performance and development, and driving process improvements. The role also serves as a key resource and drives collaboration across faculty, staff, and external partners. If you enjoy leading teams in a fast-paced laboratory environment focused on diagnostic excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement, you will thrive in this role.
The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Oversee daily Anatomic Pathology laboratory operations, workflows, staffing, equipment, and troubleshooting to ensure efficient diagnostic services.
  • Lead, train, and support technical staff while fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Perform and supervise specialized anatomic pathology diagnostic procedures and maintain technical expertise across all lab functions.
  • Manage quality assurance, regulatory compliance, audits, and continuous improvement activities to maintain laboratory standards.

Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a biological, laboratory, or health science field with at least two years of leadership experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge in anatomic pathology techniques and instrumentation
  • Demonstrated experience leading laboratory operations including coordinating workflows, managing priorities, and supporting high-quality scientific or diagnostic services.
  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop technical staff while fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to effectively manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven setting.
  • Experience supporting quality assurance systems and ensuring compliance with laboratory policies and other requirements.
  • Ability to understand and apply scientific laboratory principles and procedures while partnering with technical experts to support operations.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position, including the ability to sit or stand for extended periods and occasionally lift or move laboratory materials and equipment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing operations within a diagnostic, research, clinical, or veterinary laboratory.
  • Experience with forensic case processing, including chain of custody and documentation.
  • Professional certification in a laboratory or scientific discipline (e.g., ASCP or similar).

Important Details about the Position
  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.
