Job description

About Forest Solutions:

Forest Solutions Inc. (FSI) has been Hawaiʻi’s leading forestry and land management company for over 25 years, specializing in large-scale tree planting, invasive species control, wildfire prevention, native forest restoration, timber plantation management, forest inventory, agroforestry, permitting, and community engagement. As a team-oriented small business, FSI brings together project managers, foresters, natural resource specialists, technicians, and field crews to address Hawaiʻi’s unique land management challenges. Our work is rooted in scientific best practices, field expertise, and a deep connection to Hawai‘i’s biocultural heritage. FSI has played a key role in shaping large-scale forest management, including planting over 1,000,000 native plants across 3,500 acres, including the largest native forest restoration project in the state.

This is an opportunity to be part of a diverse and impactful team working on meaningful conservation efforts in Hawaiʻi’s stunning and rugged landscapes.

About the Job:

We are seeking Field Crew Members who are passionate about the outdoors and environmental stewardship to support daily field operations across Hawaiʻi Island. This is an entry level, full-time position working as part of a crew to complete diverse forest management projects, many of which take place in remote locations not accessible to the general public.

Work locations vary depending on project needs and may require extended off-road driving, limited communication, and camping in remote areas for up to a week at a time. The position involves regular cross-country hiking and traversing sometimes up to 6 miles per day often through thick vegetation and wet conditions.

This role is physically demanding and highly rewarding. Productivity, dependability, clear communication, and a positive team-oriented attitude are essential for success.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Tree planting and forest restoration work
  • Weed and invasive species control; including targeted application of herbicides (training provided as needed)
  • Operation and use of small hand-held equipment, including but not limited to: weed eaters, chainsaws, pruners, backpack sprayers, etc.
  • Adherence to invasive species prevention protocols, including cleaning and decontaminating personal gear, equipment, and vehicles before and after use.
  • Fence repair and maintenance
  • Tree pruning
  • Trail maintenance and establishment
  • Opportunity to operate tractors with mower decks or similar land management equipment
  • Camping in remote locations for up to one week at a time, with three-day weekends; sometimes for multiple weeks consecutively
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Qualifications:

  • Willingness and ability to work alone or in small teams in remote locations, with little or no mobile phone coverage
  • Ability to follow maps and utilize GPS equipment
  • Physically able to walk long distances in rugged terrain, over sharp lava fields or in thick forests for a full workday in all weather. Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Experience operating small powered tools safely such as weed eaters, chainsaw, etc.
  • Mechanical aptitude or willingness to learn equipment operation
  • Willing to mix and apply pesticides and chemical fertilizers in strict accordance with label requirements
  • Enthusiasm for outdoor, and physically demanding work
  • Able to drive 4WD, manual transmission vehicles on rough roads, valid US driver’s license at the time of hire
  • Able to legally work in the United States at the time of hire

*Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position*

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the ecology of native Hawaiian flora and fauna
  • Experience with field equipment – UTV/ATV, tractor, etc.
  • Speak or understand languages other than English; especially Spanish

Compensation & Benefits:

Competitive compensation starts at $21.00 per hour, depending on experience; use of company vehicles; 401K retirement plan; healthcare including general, dental, and vision; and PTO policy plus holiday pay.
