About the Senator John Heinz History Center

The Senator John Heinz History Center is a Smithsonian-affiliated Museum and a first-day Pittsburgh attraction that presents compelling stories from American history with a Western Pennsylvania connection, all in an interactive and engaging environment for visitors of all ages.  The largest history museum in Pennsylvania, the AAM-accredited History Center attracts large and diverse audiences to its 370,000-square-foot facility in Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District that includes six floors of long-term and changing exhibition space along with spectacular spaces for unique events.

The History Center’s family of museums includes the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, a dynamic museum-within-a-museum; the Fort Pitt Museum in Point State Park; and Meadowcroft Rockshelter & Historic Village, a National Historic Landmark located in Avella, Washington County, Pa. The History Center also leads a partnership of more than 125 regional historical societies, museums, and organizations dedicated to preserving local history – the History Center Affiliates Program.

Job Posting

The Tour & Docent Coordinator works as a key member of the Senator Heinz History Center’s Learning Team. This individual’s primary responsibilities are to coordinate group tours and volunteer docents for the Heinz History Center, with a focus on K-12 students. The Tour & Docent Coordinator maintains the database reservation system and ensures that group tour arrangements are successful from the initial tour request through the arrival of the group on their scheduled date until follow up post-visit with evaluations and invoicing. This position develops and implements processes for scheduling volunteer docents and works to establish and maintain positive relationships between the docents, museum staff, and group audiences. The Tour & Docent Coordinator facilitates the success of education programs by establishing and maintaining an efficient and effective reservation process and working closely with team members to provide meaningful learning experiences for groups.

This is a full-time, salary, non-exempt position reporting to the Affiliates Program Manager.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree and one to three years’ experience with demonstrated skills in cultivating and coordinating group tour audiences, with preference for non-profit experience
  • Experience in informal education techniques within a museum setting preferred
  • Demonstrated experience providing high levels of customer service
  • Effective oral and listening skills and the ability to work effectively with people of diverse cultures, ages, and economic backgrounds
  • Excellent writing skills; positive approach to problem solving, collaborating with others, and  in approaching new tasks
  • Highly organized project management skills; and the ability to use Microsoft Office suite of programs and reservation database.
