About this Position:
The STEM Lab tutor provides academic support services and works with students individually and in small groups to develop and implement tools to help those students improve their science, math, and analytical skills.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a science or math intensive discipline (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, etc.)
  • Minimum of one to two years working in an academic setting with faculty and staff.
  • Minimum of one year teaching and/or tutoring experience.
  • Successful completion of college-level science, math, and other quantitative coursework (transcript(s) required).

Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of educational tutoring principles, practices, techniques and theory.
  • Skill in presenting ideas and concepts orally and in writing to a diverse audience and adapting communication style to that audience.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to team environment.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions and take appropriate action, resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate diplomatically, clearly, and effectively, both verbally and in writing to exchange information, give/receive instructions and respond to inquiries appropriately with all students, faculty, staff and community partners.
  • High degree of initiative to work independently and also collaborate in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of office technologies including but not limited to: office computers, scanners, internet, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Passion for assisting customers and representing the OSU-OKC and OSU brand with positivity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated history of ethical and professional behavior.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in science or mathematics, or a bachelor's degree in a related field with relevant experience assisting high school and college students with academic difficulties.
  • Ability to tutor students in college level science and math courses (i.e. biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, etc.)
  • Two years' experience providing instruction and/or tutoring to adult learners in a higher education setting.

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Provide high quality, ethical academic support services to students.
  2. Assist students with general questions, computer help, or in connecting with a tutor or Academic Success Coach
  3. Providing feedback to the STEM Lab Coordinator about common struggles or themes within the students served.
  4. Provide tutoring in an individual, group, or workshop setting.
  5. Complete all mandatory training and participate in a minimum of two professional developments each year.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:
  • Must be able to work flexible hours to include some nights and weekends.

  • Duties require extended periods of sitting, talking and listening.
  • Duties require extensive use of computers, telephones and other office equipment.
  • Requires possible lifting of up to 25 lbs. (If an object weights more than 45 lbs., OSU-Oklahoma City requires this to be a two-person lift).
