Work EnvironmentDesign studios, architectural firms, urban planning projectsResidential, commercial, and hospitality interior spaces
Industry UsageUsed in urban planning, landscape integration, and spatial planningPrimarily in residential and commercial interior spaces

Full Time Spatial Design focuses on the overall arrangement and planning of spaces, often involving urban or environmental contexts, while Full Time Interior Design concentrates on the aesthetics and functionality of indoor spaces. Both roles require design credentials but differ in scope and application.

What does a full time spatial design do?

A full-time spatial designer creates and plans physical environments, such as interior layouts, public spaces, or architectural features, using design principles and tools like CAD software. They analyze space requirements, collaborate with clients and teams, and ensure functional and aesthetic outcomes in various settings.

What industries employ full time spatial designers?

Full time spatial designers are employed across industries such as architecture, urban planning, interior design, landscape architecture, and exhibition design. They use skills in 3D modeling, CAD software, and visualization to create functional and aesthetic spatial environments in commercial, residential, public, and cultural projects.

What is the future of full time spatial design?

Full time spatial design is expected to grow as demand for innovative and functional environments increases across sectors like architecture, urban planning, and interior design. Professionals in this field will likely need skills in 3D modeling, visualization tools, and sustainable design practices to stay competitive in evolving markets.

Frontend/UI Developer

Job description

Job Summary
Full-time: 37.5 Hours per week, Monday to Friday
Location: Ottawa Office (Up to 3 days per week), 70 Laurier Ave West, Suite 310, Ottawa, ON K1P 5V5 and Ottawa-based Home Office, or, remote if located outside of the National Capital Region.
Reporting To: Director of Technology
Salary Range: $80,000-90,000
Type of Vacancy: New
We are looking for a UI/Frontend Developer to join the Larus team. You will design and build the interfaces through which military planners, analysts, and decision-makers make sense of complex, high-stakes information, interactive maps with NATO symbology, AI-powered workflows, rich text and code editors, and collaborative scenario planning tools. This is not a dashboard role: you will build decision-support tools where clarity and responsiveness directly impact outcomes.
You will own features end-to-end, from gathering requirements with domain experts, through architecture and implementation, to shipping tested code. We expect you to have opinions about how frontend applications should be structured, and the experience to back them up. You will influence technical direction, mentor junior developers, and contribute to a codebase built on Feature-Sliced Design, headless UI primitives, and a custom design system.
Key Responsibilities
  • Gather requirements from subject matter experts (including defence and military specialists), design user flows, and deliver working software;
  • Architect and build complex, interactive React/TypeScript applications, geospatial interfaces, editors, data-dense views, and AI-integrated workflows;
  • Design and maintain frontend state effectively, choosing the right patterns for client, server, and UI state;
  • Build and extend a custom design system with headless primitives, scoped styling, and design tokens;
  • Plan and conduct user studies (usability testing, A/B experiments, surveys) and use findings to iterate on designs;
  • Write tests at every level, unit, integration, and end-to-end; and participate in code reviews;
  • Present designs and demos to stakeholders; and
  • Collaborate across disciplines, backend engineers, data scientists, and product managers, within an agile process.

Qualifications
Some individuals are less likely to apply for a job unless they consider they are a perfect match. At Larus Technologies, we welcome motivated individuals to our diverse and inclusive workplace. Thus, if you are excited about this role but do not have every qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway.
Expected qualifications include:
  • University degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience;
  • Required to meet qualifications to obtain a Canadian Government security clearance (typically requires Canadian citizenship or permanent residency);
  • At least 2 years of professional frontend development experience;
  • Strong proficiency with React and TypeScript;
  • Experience with modern state management (Zustand, Redux Toolkit, or similar) and server state patterns (TanStack Query, SWR, or equivalent);
  • Experience with REST API integration and generated API clients;
  • Experience writing unit, integration, and end-to-end tests (Vitest or Jest, Testing Library, Playwright or Cypress);
  • Working knowledge of Git workflows and CI/CD pipelines;
  • Strong communicator comfortable gathering requirements from domain experts and presenting to both technical and non-technical audiences; and
  • Genuine interest in the product, understanding what we're building and why.
Technical Skill Requirements, working knowledge of:
  • GIS/geospatial interfaces-  MapLibre GL, Mapbox, Leaflet, or OpenLayers; GeoJSON and spatial analysis;
  • Rich text editors (TipTap, ProseMirror, Slate) or code editors (CodeMirror);
  • AI/ML-powered UX- Integrating LLM services, building chat interfaces, or designing human-in-the-loop features;
  • User research- Planning usability studies, A/B tests, or surveys and translating findings into design improvements;
  • Docker, Azure DevOps, or similar deployment and CI/CD platforms;
  • Familiarity with Python for cross-team collaboration;
Desired Higher-Level Skills:
These are not required, but will set you apart and open pathways to seniority:
  • Frontend architecture - modular methodologies (Feature-Sliced Design or similar), clear module boundaries, incremental migration planning;
  • Design system ownership - design tokens, accessible components, visual consistency across themes and responsive layouts;
  • UI/UX design and validation - wireframing and prototyping (Figma), designing and interpreting user studies, accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA);
  • Performance engineering - profiling React applications, bundle analysis, lazy loading, code splitting;
  • Technical communication - design diagrams, architecture decision records, documentation; and
  • Security awareness - OWASP top 10 frontend vulnerabilities and secure development practices.
What You Can Expect
  • A collaborative team working on problems that matter in the defence and security domain;
  • A modern tech stack - React 19, TypeScript, Zustand, TanStack Query, Vite, MapLibre GL, TipTap, Playwright, and a custom design system;
  • A well-structured codebase following Feature-Sliced Design;
  • Opportunities to shape architecture and technical direction; and
  • Room to grow into more experienced roles
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation package; $80,000-90,000
  • Comprehensive Health and Dental insurance package;
  • Competitive vacation and paid time off;
  • Company-sponsored team-building events; and
  • Learning and development opportunities.
