Job description

Project Engineer

Location: Denver, Colorado

General Accountability and Summary

This role will appeal to a collaborative individual, with a broad interest in and exposure to various aspects of engineering design and project management in the mining field. The individual will be motivated to play a role in taking TMG through its next phase of growth and development. Based in the Toronto Office and reporting to the Project Manager, the Project Engineer is responsible for various technical, administrative, business development, and project management functions related to TMG’s various project sites.

The successful candidate will be expected to spend at least twelve (12) of their first twenty-four (24) months with the company engaged on a long-term and site-based construction and/or commissioning mandate. This will involve a high degree of business travel to remote and/or hardship sites for up to eight (8) weeks at a time, depending on the location and assignment conditions. This may also involve living in a construction and/or mining operations camp on the site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establishes the reporting criteria, content and format for monthly status reports, cost variance reporting, forecasts, budget updates, change control notices, and monthly presentations to Owner management.
  • Provides regular weekly and monthly reports with appropriate analysis to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop execution plans and establish logic networks for sequencing of tasks related to engineering, procurement, fabrication, and construction activities.
  • Support the development of schedules for projects and studies.
  • Analyze contractor schedules and prepare critical path task reports.
  • Monitor contractor performance against established schedule targets.
  • Expedite contractor deliverables and adherence to the schedule.
  • Organize and run weekly schedule review meetings with necessary stakeholders to assess and plan work on a 6-week rolling forecast.
  • Alert project management and engineering personnel to potential schedule risks and support the development of recovery plans.
  • Following up on action items with responsible personnel to ensure that items are closed out completely and on time.
  • Equipment list development and ownership throughout the project life cycle.
  • Participation in the overall procurement process, including scope definition, specification preparation, datasheet population, tender evaluation and recommendation, contract award, kick-off meetings, and expediting both internal and external parties in order to meet the schedule requirements for various equipment packages.
  • Follow-up with vendor representatives to verify that all technical documentation required for fabrication and shipment are submitted and reviewed in accordance with the project schedule.
  • Participation in design and project execution review meetings.
  • Preparation of various project deliverables including Scopes of Work, Technical Specifications, reports, engineering calculations, estimates, and financial models.
  • Preparation of minutes of meeting for various project meetings and following up on action items with responsible personnel to ensure that items are closed out completely and on time.
  • Regular travel to mine sites to meet with project stakeholders and/or long-term site assignments for construction and commissioning engagements may be required.
  • Coordinate with the Owner Operations personnel for project feedback and execution support.
  • Support one or more TMG Project Managers in a variety of project needs as required.
  • Support TMG Corporate Business Development, Marketing, and/or Administrative tasks as required.
  • Promote and demonstrate both TMG and client values at all times
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to interact with all stakeholders with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to deal with the mental and physical pressures of site rotation to remote and/or hardship sites will be required.

Experience, Qualifications & Education

  • 5 years of experience in engineering and design.
  • Combined 5 years of experience in project development, construction, and/or mine operations.
  • University degree in a relevant engineering field.
  • Experience directing internal and external teams involved in multiple activities.
  • Experience in technical writing or document management would be an asset.
  • Experience in database setup and management would be an asset.
  • Experience in process, metallurgical, mining, or geotechnical engineering would be an asset.
  • Fluency in a secondary language would be an asset (French or Spanish preferred).
  • Licensed Professional Engineer, or an ability to obtain a P.Eng designation.

  • Compensation: Base salary, benefits, bonus, Deferred Profit Sharing Plan. Site-based rotation assignment conditions may also allow for uplift, per-diem, living allowance, and/or completion bonus.
