How much do full time signal processing engineer jobs pay per year?

As of May 31, 2026, the average yearly pay for full time signal processing engineer in the United States is $131,349.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $108,500.00 and $147,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Signal Processing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Signal Processing Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, digital signal processing (DSP) theory, and a relevant engineering degree (typically in electrical engineering or computer engineering). Familiarity with MATLAB, Python, C/C++, and tools like Simulink, as well as knowledge of DSP hardware and algorithms, is essential, and certifications in signal processing or related fields can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help engineers interpret complex data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These capabilities are crucial for developing and optimizing signal processing systems that meet technical requirements and drive innovation in applications like communications, audio, and imaging.

What are some common challenges faced by Full Time Signal Processing Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Full Time Signal Processing Engineers often work with large and complex datasets, which can present challenges in terms of noise reduction, signal integrity, and computational efficiency. Staying current with evolving algorithms and emerging hardware platforms is also crucial. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, such as hardware engineers and software developers, is essential to ensure seamless integration of signal processing solutions. To address these challenges, engineers should invest in continuous learning, leverage simulation tools, and maintain clear communication within multidisciplinary teams.

What does a Full Time Signal Processing Engineer do?

A Full Time Signal Processing Engineer designs, develops, and implements algorithms and systems for analyzing and manipulating signals, such as audio, video, radar, or sensor data. They work on tasks like filtering noise, extracting useful information, and optimizing signal transmission or storage. These engineers often use mathematical models and software tools to process real-world signals for applications in telecommunications, healthcare, defense, and multimedia. Their role may also involve testing, debugging, and improving signal processing systems to ensure high performance and reliability.

What is the difference between Full Time Signal Processing Engineer vs Signal Analyst?

AspectFull Time Signal Processing EngineerSignal Analyst
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields; knowledge of DSP and programmingBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related; strong analytical skills
Work EnvironmentDesign, develop, and optimize signal processing algorithms in labs or officesAnalyze signal data, interpret results, and prepare reports, often in research or operational settings
Industry UsageCommon in telecommunications, defense, aerospace, and electronics manufacturingUsed in telecommunications, defense, and research institutions for data analysis

While both roles involve working with signals, a Full Time Signal Processing Engineer focuses on designing and implementing processing algorithms, whereas a Signal Analyst primarily interprets and analyzes signal data. The engineer's role is more technical and development-oriented, while the analyst's role emphasizes data interpretation and reporting.

Job description

CX2 is a next-generation defense technology company founded to deliver spectrum dominance for the United States and our allies. CX2's AI-enabled hardware and software platforms detect, disrupt and defend the electromagnetic spectrum across land, air, sea and space domains.

CX2 is seeking a highly skilled Signal Processing Engineer to join our growing team. The ideal candidate has solid fundamentals in design, implementation and testing of signal processing techniques using MATLAB, Python and other existing frameworks. Experience in Defense is preferred.

This role requires an onsite presence in our El Segundo, CA HQ; a remote work environment is not considered for this opportunity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Digital Signal processing: Design, characterize, and deliver algorithms such as channelizers, frequency agile detection, adaptive filters, MIMO, wideband detectors, and other algorithms related to signal sorting
  • Write and contribute to existing Python repositories using CUDA and/PyTorch
  • Own requirements, ICDs, and verification from concept through delivery
  • Stay current: Track and insert advances in signal processing techniques and associated technologies, adaptive beamforming, RF machine learning, and resilient PNT for GPS-denied ops.

Required Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in Electrical, Computer or Systems Engineering or related field with Graduate study emphasis in Signal Processing; OR a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline with 3-5 years relevant working Signal Processing Experience
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Python
  • Willingness to support critical test events that occasionally require extended hours/weekends.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Learn more about Security Clearances here.
  • Must be a U.S. Person (see ITAR Regulations below) due to required access to U.S. export-controlled information or facilities

Bonus Points
  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years' experience with EW subsystems and payloads.
  • EA/ECM technique design (deception, Digital RF Memory, coherent/non-coherent techniques).
  • Comms system design (LPI/LPD, Waveform-of-Interest exploitation)
  • RF machine learning for emitter ID, modulation/classification, anomaly detection, PDW creation
  • Tools Experience: ADS/AWR/SystemVue, MATLAB/Simulink, Python (NumPy/SciPy), GNU Radio/SDR (USRP/RFSoC), VITA-49; HDL/firmware experience also helpful (Vivado/Quartus/Libero).
  • Clearance: Active Secret or ability to obtain and maintain; TS/SCI eligibility preferred. ITAR/EAR-controlled work.
  • Field work: supporting periodic travel for flight tests and customer demonstrations/support
  • Mindset: Builder-tester who loves first-principles RF, rapid lab iteration, and getting hardware flying fast.
ITAR Regulations
  • To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a US Citizen, Green Card holder, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. Learn more about the ITAR here.
What We Offer
