Overview

Kimley-Horn's Long Beach office is seeking a Waterfront Structural Engineer with 3+ years of experience to join their Structures team. This is not a remote position.

Responsibilities
  • Perform structural analysis and design calculations for marine structures including pile-supported platforms, wharves, sheet pile walls, bulkheads, and floating dock systems under the direction of a licensed engineer.
  • Develop and maintain structural models, applying appropriate loading conditions including gravity, seismic, wave, and vessel impact loads.
  • Produce construction drawings, design details, and specifications in AutoCAD and/or Revit consistent with project requirements and applicable codes (ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC, AASHTO).
  • Support coastal and waterfront permitting efforts by preparing technical exhibits, calculations, and supporting documentation for regulatory submissions.
  • Assist project managers with data collection, field observation reports, condition assessments, and site investigation support at waterfront project sites.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams including coastal engineers, environmental scientists, and planners to ensure structural design integration.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and project presentations under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Maintain organized project files, track action items, and support project schedule adherence.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; Master's degree in Structural Engineering strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of structural engineering experience in a professional consulting or design environment.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required with ability to obtain Professional Engineer (PE) licensure preferred.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis software such as ETABS, RISA-3D, STAAD, SAP2000, or Abaqus.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD; experience with Revit or Civil 3D a plus.
  • Familiarity with structural design codes including ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC Steel Construction Manual, and AASHTO.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrated attention to calculation accuracy and documentation quality.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering with coursework in structural dynamics, advanced structural analysis, finite element methods, or probabilistic methods.
  • Exposure to marine, waterfront, or coastal infrastructure projects - including wharves, piers, transit stations, or bridge structures - through internship, graduate research, or early career experience.
  • Familiarity with seismic design principles including Response Spectrum Analysis per ASCE 7.
  • Experience with MATLAB or Python for engineering calculations, data processing, or structural simulation workflows.
  • Knowledge of geotechnical fundamentals (soil mechanics, lateral earth pressure, pile behavior) as applicable to marine structural foundations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical findings clearly through written reports and visual presentations.
