What is the difference between Full Time Scientist Metabolomics vs Full Time Biochemist?

AspectFull Time Scientist MetabolomicsFull Time Biochemist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related; experience in metabolomics techniquesBachelor's or Master's in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related; laboratory experience in biochemistry
Work EnvironmentResearch labs focusing on metabolite analysis, data interpretation, and mass spectrometryLaboratories conducting biochemical assays, enzyme studies, and protein analysis
Industry UsagePharmaceutical, biotech, academic researchHealthcare, biotech, research institutions

While both roles require a strong background in biochemistry and laboratory skills, a Full Time Scientist Metabolomics specializes in analyzing small molecules in biological samples using advanced techniques like mass spectrometry. In contrast, a Full Time Biochemist focuses more broadly on biochemical processes, enzyme functions, and protein studies. The roles often overlap in research settings but differ in their specific technical focus and applications.

What does a full time scientist in metabolomics do?

A Full Time Scientist in Metabolomics conducts research to analyze and interpret the chemical processes involving metabolites within biological systems. Their work often includes designing experiments, using advanced analytical instruments like mass spectrometry and NMR, and processing large datasets to identify and quantify small molecules. They may collaborate with biologists, chemists, and clinicians to uncover insights about metabolic pathways, disease mechanisms, or drug effects. The role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and experience with scientific software and laboratory techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time scientist in metabolomics?

A Full Time Scientist in Metabolomics requires a strong background in biochemistry or related life sciences, often with a PhD or equivalent experience, and expertise in analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry and chromatography. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), data analysis software (such as XCMS or MetaboAnalyst), and relevant certifications in laboratory safety or GLP are commonly expected. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help scientists interpret complex data and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure high-quality research output, reliable data interpretation, and innovation in metabolomics studies.

What are some common challenges faced by a full time scientist in metabolomics, and how can they be addressed?

A Full Time Scientist in Metabolomics often encounters challenges such as managing complex data sets, ensuring accurate sample preparation, and keeping up with rapidly evolving analytical technologies. These challenges can be addressed by maintaining strong attention to detail, collaborating closely with bioinformaticians and laboratory technicians, and participating in ongoing training or workshops. Effective communication within multidisciplinary teams also plays a key role in troubleshooting issues and driving successful research outcomes.

Job description

Overview
Alnylam's Translational Research group is seeking a highly motivated Metabolomics Scientist to join our team. We use untargeted and targeted liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)-based omics and computational biology to support biomarker discovery and target validation efforts for our RNAi-based therapeutics. The successful candidate will have a background in biological sample preparation for endogenous metabolites/lipids, LC-MS/MS operation/troubleshooting, and omics-level data analysis.
This position is onsite and will be primarily located in Cambridge, MA.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, validate, and apply LC-MS/MS methods for endogenous metabolite and lipid quantification to identify and measure biomarkers, characterize pharmacodynamic activity of novel therapeutic molecules, and answer foundational biological questions.
  • Perform end-to-end metabolite/lipid sample preparation protocols for biofluids, solid tissues, and cultured cells.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot LC-MS systems as needed.
  • Develop and apply bioinformatics tools for large-scale data processing and statistical analysis.
  • Identify and onboard novel technologies for biomarker measurement and identification.
  • Maintain QC records, analyze data, and document protocols/results in a clearly organized electronic lab notebook.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary and external teams to support preclinical and clinical drug discovery activities.
  • Contribute to preclinical/clinical study design and biomarker strategies for drug candidate programs.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for general questions pertaining to translational biology.
  • Present results at internal/external meetings and author findings in reports/manuscripts.

Qualifications
  • PhD in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, biological engineering, or related field required, with post-doctoral experience a plus; or MS with 8+ years' experience, preferably in pharma/biotech.
  • Direct experience with triple-quadrupole and high-resolution accurate mass LC-MS/MS-based methods for endogenous metabolite/lipid quantification (ideally with Sciex QTRAP and Thermo Orbitrap systems), including assay development and validation.
  • Experience with metabolite/lipid extraction sample preparation from biofluids, tissues, and/or cultured cells.
  • Experience with relevant omics-based bioinformatics software; familiarity with basic programming languages (e.g. Python or R) and/or AI-based coding tools (e.g. Claude Code or Codex) is a strong plus.
  • Experience with stable isotope tracing and/or metabolic flux analysis is also a plus.
  • A strong publication record and demonstration of successful collaborations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong abilities to work both independently and in a team environment.

Intellectual curiosity, a passion for science, critical thinking skills, and a willingness to ask questions.
