Job description

The Security: School Safety Officer at EMNRBS plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors within our school premises. This position involves working with a collaborative team alongside other School Safety Officers, and performing various duties to ensure a positive and engaging learning community at all times.
This position requires a "people person"; someone who has a true passion and desire to work through collaboration with all students, families, staff and visitors at EMNRBS; a willingness to learn best practices in the field of school safety; an understanding of de-escalation methodologies; and, display and maintain professionalism at all times as a representative of the school. The most important characteristics/traits to possess in order to be successful in this position are: having a calm and solution-oriented mindset, being culturally responsiveness, detail oriented and punctual, being firm yet empathetic, and having a respectful and approachable demeanor at all times.
Reporting directly to the EMNRBS' Head of School Safety, this full-time staff position will work as a "bridge" between staff, students, students families and the local community. Given the dynamic nature of the school, this position can expect to work extended hours and some weekends to provide additional support as necessary.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Relationship Building with Scholars:
    Establish positive rapport with students to help create a school culture rooted in respect, safety, and community trust.
  • Communication with Families and Staff:
    Engage professionally and respectfully with parents, guardians, and community members. Provide information or assistance as needed while upholding confidentiality and school expectations.
  • Access & Visitor Management:
    Monitor and control access to the building. Greet and verify visitors, contractors, and guests in accordance with school policy.
  • Campus Security & Surveillance:
    Monitor entrances, hallways, common areas, and outdoor spaces to ensure student movement is efficient and effective in order to ensure maximized learning time. Conduct regular patrols throughout the campus to support visitors and staff on an as-needed basis.
  • De-Escalation & Conflict Resolution:
    Respond calmly and appropriately to behavioral incidents, working in partnership with school leaders and staff to defuse conflicts and guide students toward resolution.
  • Special Event Security:
    Provide support and oversight during school events, athletic competitions, and assemblies. Ensure the safety of attendees and enforce school rules.
  • Emergency Preparedness & Response:
    Assist in fire drills, lockdowns, and other emergency procedures. Maintain a clear understanding of crisis protocols and help execute them as needed.
  • Incident Documentation:
    Record and report safety-related incidents using school protocols. Collaborate with the administration on follow-up and preventative measures.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned and/or requested

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED (required)
  • Associate's degree or military/law enforcement background (preferred)
  • Prior experience in youth engagement, school security, and/or public safety (strongly preferred)
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with adolescents (strongly preferred)
  • Bilingual (strongly preferred)
  • Proven ability to remain calm under pressure and de-escalate tense situations
  • Ability to stand and patrol for extended periods of time
  • Familiarity with school safety policies and emergency protocols
  • CPR/First Aid and SORA (Security Officer Registration Act) certification preferred or willingness to obtain
