What is full time remote journalism?

Full time remote journalism refers to working as a journalist on a full-time basis while performing all duties remotely, often from home or another location outside of a traditional newsroom. Journalists in this role research, report, write, and edit stories using digital tools and communicate with editors and sources online or over the phone. This setup allows for flexibility and can open opportunities to work for organizations located anywhere in the world. However, it also requires strong self-discipline, time management, and digital communication skills. Remote journalists may cover news, features, or specialized topics depending on their employer and area of expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time remote journalist?

To thrive as a Full Time Remote Journalist, you need strong writing, research, and interviewing skills, typically supported by a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), digital publishing tools, and multimedia editing software is often required. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this remote role. These abilities ensure timely, accurate reporting and collaboration with editors and teams despite working from different locations.

How do remote journalists effectively collaborate with editors and other team members while working from different locations?

Remote journalists typically rely on digital communication tools such as Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms to stay connected with editors and colleagues. Regular virtual meetings, clear editorial calendars, and shared document platforms help ensure everyone is aligned on story direction, deadlines, and feedback. Building strong communication habits and proactively reaching out for clarification or support are essential for maintaining smooth workflows and producing high-quality journalism in a remote environment.

The Free Press is growing fast. We need an editor who can respond quickly to news events, craft smart stories, and get the best out of writers. We’re looking for a sharp, creative, and highly organized Contributions Editor to join our editorial team. In this role, you’ll work directly with outside writers—from established voices to first-time contributors—to bring compelling stories, and arguments to life for our audience. You’ll be the bridge between The Free Press and a diverse set of thinkers, ensuring that every piece we publish is distinctive, rigorous, and true to our mission.

  • Help brainstorm editorial packages, special series, and big-picture coverage ideas.
  • Collaborate with design, audience, and production teams to maximize reach and impact.
Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience as an editor in journalism, publishing, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated skill in editing op-eds, essays, or reported features.
  • A strong editorial voice with the ability to sharpen arguments and elevate prose.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple projects at once.
  • Familiarity with the current media and cultural landscape, with an eye for stories that break through.
  • A track record of working with a wide range of writers, from seasoned journalists to emerging voices.
  • Passion for The Free Press’s mission and curiosity about ideas across the political and cultural spectrum
Location: New York, NU (in office; remote US considered for exceptional candidates)
Employment: Full-time
Other benefits: health, dental, vision; 401(k); paid time off and holidays; parental leave; short and long-term incentive plans
