Job description

Job Objective: Under the supervision of the Radiology Director and Radiology Manager the radiology secretary/scheduler shall be responsible for the coordination and scheduling of the radiology patient. The duties include performing as a liaison for interventional radiology procedures between the hospital and referring physician offices. Provide assistance of clerical duties for radiology.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. General Responsibilities
    1. Act as a Liaison for Radiology and assists in the procedural paperwork process and scheduling of IR procedures as needed between the hospital and referring physician offices
    2. Pre coordination of radiology patients including scheduling
    3. Schedules radiology exams and communicate appointments to patients
    4. Provides normal clerical support as needed to support unit functions such as copying, scanning, typing, filing, faxing and ordering of departmental supplies
    5. Coordinates appointments for multiple modalities as needed
    6. Processes paperwork and prioritizes according to the highest need
    7. Answers telephone and responds to requests and routes calls/requests to the appropriate department and staff
    8. Assists technologists with daily patient workflow
    9. Uploads outside CD into PACS for radiologists to review
    10. Assist technologist/respond to the needs of the radiologist and other medical staff
    11. Obtain orders from physicians
    12. Obtain patient information and complete release form as required
    13. Burn CDs for Emergency Department patients as well as inpatients as needed/fax reports
    14. Prepare daily roster
    15. Report equipment malfunction to supervisor or lead
    16. Ability to work in different areas and be flexible in meeting the staffing requirements of the department
    17. Ability to learn required computer skills within orientation period and maintains competency
    18. High degree of involvement with patients and family members
    19. Maintains department specific certifications
    20. Processes and coordinates information for team leaders and charge units as needed
    21. Monitors PACS worklist for timely completion of all exams/scans
    22. Addresses delays in Radiologists reading by communicating with RIMA helpdesk to expedite readings
    23. Ensures final reports are in Cerner

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Assists in special projects as assigned

  • Working knowledge of basic medical terminology or ability to successfully complete studies in medical terminology within six (6) months of employment

Education and Experience:

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Participates in age specific educational and training programs

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in medical secretary scheduling
  • Previous secretarial experience greater than one year preferred
  • Medical Terminology preferred
  • Basic knowledge of radiology procedures preferred
  • Basic knowledge of patient care preferred
  • Cerner scheduling experience preferred
  • Coordination of IR procedures preferred
  • PACS system preferred

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Possess and maintain current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers
