Job description

Advanced Processing Coating Process Engineer
As an Advanced Processing Coating Process Engineer, you will directly support our mission to enable the world's most advanced chip manufacturing. You will be a subject-matter expert in thin-film deposition processes, optical coating performance, and process stability for high-precision optical components.
In this role, you will work in a dynamic, collaborative manufacturing and development environment, partnering with production teams, equipment engineering, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver robust, repeatable, and high-performance optical coatings.
Role Overview
The Advanced Processing Coating Process Engineer is responsible for developing, industrializing, and sustaining optical thin-film coating processes used on high-value precision optics. You will own coating process performance across development and production, lead equipment and process qualifications, and drive continuous improvement in yield, reliability, and optical performance in a fast-paced, high-tech manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Process Responsibilities
  • Develop a deep understanding of optical thin-film requirements, including reflectivity, transmission, uniformity, stress, adhesion, and cosmetic performance.
  • Develop, optimize, and sustain optical coating processes using physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques such as electron beam evaporation, sputtering, and ion-assisted deposition.
  • Own process recipes, control parameters, and process windows to ensure stable and repeatable coating performance.
  • Troubleshoot coating-related issues including optical performance shifts, defects, adhesion failures, and cosmetic non-conformances.
  • Analyze process, metrology, and test data to identify trends, reduce variation, and improve yield and throughput.
  • Support day-to-day production needs, including process certification, escalations, technician training & certification, and root cause investigations.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance coating performance, productivity, and equipment utilization.

Documentation & Compliance
  • Generate high-quality technical documentation including engineering test plans, qualification reports, work instructions, and process specifications.
  • Maintain coating process documentation, OCAPs, and change control records.
  • Apply structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g., FMEA, 8D, DMAIC) to improve process robustness.
  • Collaborate with EHS and operations teams to ensure safe operation of coating systems and compliance with environmental and safety requirements.

Equipment & Project Management
  • Lead coating equipment projects from concept through vendor engagement, specification, FAT/SAT, installation, and internal qualification.
  • Support equipment troubleshooting, maintenance planning, and process capability improvements in collaboration with equipment engineering.
  • Support new product introduction (NPI) through coating process development, qualification, and release to production.
  • Participate in capital planning, equipment road-mapping, and technology upgrades.

Collaboration & Cross-Functional Support
  • Collaborate closely with production, inspection, cleaning, equipment engineering, and design teams to ensure end-to-end process success.
  • Support KPI tracking and data-driven decision making related to yield, quality, and availability.
  • Communicate clearly during escalations and lead cross-functional efforts to resolve coating performance issues.

Education & Experience
  • Master's degree with 1+ years of relevant experience, or Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience in Materials Science, Physics, Optical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience in optical thin-film coating, precision optics, or semiconductor manufacturing strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of thin-film optics, optical constants, interference coatings, and material properties.
  • Hands-on experience with PVD coating systems (e-beam, sputtering, IAD, or similar).
  • Experience with coating qualification, process transfer, and production support.
  • Experience using structured problem-solving frameworks such as FMEA, 4C, A3, or 8D.
  • Familiarity with optical metrology techniques (e.g., spectrophotometry, ellipsometry, surface inspection) is a plus.

Competencies
  • Communicate clearly and effectively across engineering, operations, and cross-functional teams.
  • Analyze complex data sets and translate results into actionable process improvements.
  • Work proactively and adapt quickly in a high-mix, fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Apply a systematic, detail-oriented approach to technical problem solving.
  • Manage multiple priorities while maintaining strong ownership and accountability.
  • Follow procedures rigorously to maintain high-quality, controlled processes.
  • Contribute ideas that improve yield, stability, and overall manufacturing excellence.
  • Build strong working relationships and support a collaborative team culture.

Additional Skills
  • Proficiency with Python, MATLAB, or similar tools for data analysis, modeling, or automation.
  • Experience with SPC, JMP, Minitab, or similar statistical analysis tools.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).

You must be work authorized in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship
Additional Responsibilities:
There is potential for exposure to strong magnetic fields, high voltage and currents.
This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
