About Shermco Industries

Shermco Industries is a recognized leader in electrical testing, commissioning, maintenance, and protection and controls services. As we continue to grow across Western Canada, we are looking for experienced field professionals to support critical power system projects throughout British Columbia.

This is an opportunity to join a highly skilled, safety-focused team supporting utilities, generation facilities, industrial clients, and critical infrastructure projects across the province.

The Opportunity

Shermco Canada is seeking a Senior Field Protection & Controls Technologist to lead field execution, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and client support on complex power system projects in British Columbia.

This is a hands-on senior field role focused on commissioning, testing, relay work, SCADA/RTU integration, field leadership, and high-quality client delivery. It is not a design-focused office role. The successful candidate will bring strong technical experience, sound judgment, and the ability to lead work safely and professionally in the field.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of protection and control systems, including protective relays, digital fault recorders, RTUs, PLC systems, communication processors, and telecom equipment.
  • Perform advanced field testing on transmission systems, buses, transformers, breakers, generation assets, feeders, reactors, and capacitor banks.
  • Configure, test, and commission advanced relay systems, including SEL relay families such as 311C, 311L, 387, 411L, 421, 487, 587, and 787, as well as GE Multilin relays such as C30, D60, L90, T60, and related platforms.
  • Support SCADA, RTU, telecommunications, and substation automation upgrades, ensuring accurate configuration, reliable integration, and strong system performance.
  • Interpret and validate protection schemes, relay settings, wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, schematics, logic diagrams, and configuration files.
  • Troubleshoot complex field issues, identify technical discrepancies, and implement practical solutions that support safe, reliable project delivery.
  • Provide field leadership to junior and intermediate team members, including mentorship, technical guidance, and support with safe work practices.
  • Act as a key client-facing technical resource during field assignments, maintaining clear communication and a professional service approach.
  • Prepare accurate test reports, commissioning documentation, deficiency notes, and project closeout records in alignment with client and company expectations.
  • Promote Shermco's safety-first culture by following all applicable safety procedures, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
Qualifications
  • 7 to 15 years of progressive field experience in protection and controls, substation commissioning, relay testing, power system testing, or a closely related electrical field services environment.
  • Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Protection and Controls, or a related discipline.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with ASTTBC or EGBC is considered an asset.
  • NETA Certification, or progress toward certification, is preferred.
  • Advanced hands-on experience with SEL relays is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with GE Multilin relays, including C30, D60, L90, T60, or related platforms, is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience with RTU, SCADA, telecom, and communication platforms such as GE, SEL, Novatech, Telvent, Cooper, or similar systems.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, protection schemes, relay settings, wiring diagrams, and commissioning documentation.
  • Proven ability to lead field work, support project execution, mentor others, and communicate effectively with clients and internal teams.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Valid driver's licence and ability to travel regularly to client sites across British Columbia.
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada.

What You'll Lead

  • Complex commissioning, testing, and modernization projects across British Columbia.
  • Field execution for protection, control, SCADA, RTU, and communication systems.
  • Technical mentorship and development of junior and intermediate field staff.
  • Safe, high-quality service delivery for utility, generation, industrial, and infrastructure clients.
  • Clear client communication, accurate reporting, and practical field-based problem solving.

Why Join Shermco Industries

  • Work on critical power system and infrastructure projects across British Columbia.
  • Join a respected technical team with deep expertise in electrical testing, commissioning, and protection and controls.
  • Access ongoing training, manufacturer certifications, and opportunities to expand your technical capability.
  • Be part of a strong safety-first culture where quality, professionalism, and doing the job right matter.
  • Build a long-term career with a growing organization that values technical leadership, field experience, and client service.

Working Conditions

This is a field-based role requiring regular travel across British Columbia. Work may include travel to utility sites, generation facilities, substations, industrial locations, and other client project sites.
