Sub-Department: Trial

Pay Grade: 116

FLSA Status: Exempt

Employment Status: Full-time

Reports to: District Attorney, First Assistant District Attorney, & Chief Deputy District Attorney

Supervises: N/A

Job Summary:

Acts on authority delegated by the district attorney to represent the Commonwealth and the County in the prosecutions of those persons who are alleged to have violated the law of the Commonwealth within the County.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists police in the investigation of criminal offenses.

    • Provides legal opinions to police relative to investigations.
    • Conducts legal research and writes opinions thereon.
    • Advises police on the drafting of criminal complaints, search warrants and statements of probable cause.
    • Evaluates evidence relative to propriety of criminal charges and search warrants.
    • Review and sign criminal information.
    • Assembles and evaluates evidence, interviews, and prepares witnesses for various court appearances.
    • Represents the Commonwealth in the prosecution of cases at preliminary hearing, pre-trial motions, pre-trial conferences, trials before court and/or jury, post-verdict motions and appeals to Superior and Supreme Courts of Pennsylvania.
    • Interacts with all other state and local law enforcement agencies and local individuals and organizations.
    • Uphold all ethical duties to seek justice in all cases.
    • Provide community prosecution out-reach to assigned police jurisdictions.
    • Perform special duties as assigned by the District Attorney.
    • Attend continuing education courses on law enforcement and related issues.
    • Attends meetings, seminars and training sessions as required.
    • Provides public service work within the County, e.g., participates in mock trials for edification of the public.
    • Performs other job-related work as assigned by the district attorney.

Minimum Requirements to Perform the Work:

Education:

  • Juris doctor degree and admission to practice before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.
  • Continuing legal education required.

Work Experience:

  • Attorneys with one to two years’ relevant experience
  • In addition to years of relevant experience, must be able to handle misdemeanor and minor felony cases, without supervision.
