What is a full time ordinary seaman?

A Full Time Ordinary Seaman is an entry-level position in the deck department of a merchant ship. Their main responsibilities include assisting with the maintenance and operation of the vessel, such as cleaning the deck, handling lines during docking and undocking, and standing watch. Ordinary Seamen work under the supervision of more experienced crew members and are essential for the safe and efficient operation of a ship. This position is a common starting point for those pursuing a maritime career, offering valuable hands-on experience and training for advancement to higher ranks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time ordinary seaman?

To thrive as a Full Time Ordinary Seaman, you need basic seamanship skills, physical fitness, and usually a high school diploma or equivalent, along with a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC). Familiarity with shipboard safety procedures, deck equipment, and navigation aids is essential, and certifications like STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) are typically required. Strong teamwork, communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for performing duties effectively in a challenging and dynamic environment. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring vessel safety, efficient operations, and compliance with maritime regulations.

What are some common challenges faced by a full time ordinary seaman during their first contract at sea?

New Ordinary Seamen often find adapting to life at sea challenging, especially when it comes to adjusting to long shifts, confined living quarters, and being away from family for extended periods. Learning and following strict safety protocols, as well as mastering deck maintenance tasks and emergency procedures, can also be demanding at first. However, most seafarers quickly develop routines, and support from more experienced crew members helps ease the transition. Effective communication and a willingness to learn are key to succeeding in this role.
