Job description

Position: Registered Nurse (RN) – Mixed Acuity / PCU / Cardiology

Location: Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Schedule: Rotating 12-Hour Shifts
Shift Times: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM / 7:00 PM–7:00 AM
Salary: $60,000–$90,000 per year
Experience: Minimum 1 year of adult acute-care nursing experience


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and develop individualized plans of care.
  • Implement, monitor, and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and nursing standards.
  • Monitor telemetry, cardiac, and hemodynamic systems.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition.
  • Provide nursing care to cardiac, thoracic, vascular, and medically complex patients.
  • Care for patients across general, intermediate, and higher-acuity levels.
  • Safely manage patients with multiple comorbidities.
  • Utilize invasive and non-invasive pressure monitoring and cardiac output monitoring as appropriate.
  • Communicate changes in patient condition to physicians and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Collaborate with respiratory therapists, technicians, case managers, physicians, and other interdisciplinary team members.
  • Delegate, monitor, and evaluate care provided by non-licensed personnel.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
  • Promote patient safety, quality care, and positive patient outcomes.
  • Provide education and emotional support to patients and their families.
  • Participate in unit-based quality improvement initiatives.
  • Follow hospital policies, procedures, and applicable nursing standards.


About the Mixed Acuity Unit

The Inpatient Mixed Acuity Unit uses a flexible care model that allows patients to remain in the same room throughout their hospital stay, even when their clinical needs change.

Patient rooms are equipped to support advanced monitoring, including:

  • EKG monitoring
  • Telemetry monitoring
  • Invasive pressure monitoring
  • Non-invasive pressure monitoring
  • Cardiac output monitoring
  • Hemodynamic monitoring
  • Specialty equipment based on patient needs

The intensity of nursing care and monitoring is adjusted according to each patient's condition.


Patient Population

RNs on the unit care primarily for patients with:

  • Cardiac conditions
  • Thoracic conditions
  • Vascular conditions
  • Cardiac procedures
  • Thoracic procedures
  • Vascular procedures
  • Diabetes
  • Renal disease
  • Pulmonary disease
  • Multiple comorbidities and complex medical conditions

The diverse patient population provides an excellent opportunity to develop clinical expertise across multiple body systems and levels of acuity.


Required Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of adult acute-care nursing experience.
  • Cardiology or cardiovascular nursing experience is preferred.

Licensure

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state, or
  • Active RN license from a state participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).

Certifications

  • BLS: Required within 30 days of employment.
  • ACLS: Required within 1 year of employment for RNs whose home department or cross-training includes PCU and other designated areas.


Preferred Qualifications

  • 1+ year of adult acute-care nursing experience.
  • Cardiology or cardiovascular nursing experience.
  • PCU or progressive-care experience.
  • Telemetry monitoring experience.
  • Hemodynamic monitoring experience.
  • Experience caring for cardiac patients.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to changes in patient condition.
  • Experience caring for patients with multiple comorbidities.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Interest in developing toward critical-care nursing.
