Role Purpose
Corning Incorporated is hiring a Process Engineer - Optical Fabrication in Fairport, NY. This is a full-time, 40 hour work week, onsite role supporting first shift operations, typically Monday-Friday, with flexibility as needed based on plant activity and project demands. The position is based at Corning's Fairport facility and requires a strong presence in the manufacturing environment. Travel is minimal (5% or less), and relocation assistance is available.
Engineers who enjoy hands-on manufacturing support, process improvement, and solving real production challenges will find strong visibility and impact here. Supporting Corning's Optical Fabrication team, you'll help introduce new products and processes into manufacturing while also driving continuous improvement across high-precision fabrication operations. This role offers a strong blend of floor-based engineering, troubleshooting, and project work, with exposure to CNC-based processes, tooling, and cross-functional collaboration across operations, quality, coating, and engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support optical fabrication manufacturing processes with a focus on process stability, yield, throughput, and quality.
  • Lead and support process improvement initiatives that reduce cost, scrap, cycle time, and complexity.
  • Troubleshoot day-to-day process issues, identify root causes, and drive corrective and preventive actions.
  • Partner with development and division engineering teams to introduce new products, technologies, and processes into manufacturing.
  • Work with CNC-based equipment. Designing tooling, fixtures, and process optimization to improve manufacturing performance.
  • Develop and maintain process documentation, including work instructions, process sheets, and flow charts.
  • Train manufacturing and engineering personnel on new processes, capabilities, and improvements.
  • Collaborate with operations, coating, quality, and other plant engineering teams to resolve issues and execute plant goals.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Optical, Chemical, or related Engineering.
  • 3+ years of process engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with process development, root cause analysis, problem-solving methodologies, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience with CNC equipment, precision machining, and tooling design.
  • Experience using 3D solid modeling software (Creo, Solidworks, etc.)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and GD&T.
  • Familiarity with statistical methods such as DOE, SPC, Six Sigma, or DMAIC.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate through cross functional teams in the manufacturing environment.
  • Track record of improving yield, cycle time, rework, and process capability

Preferred Qualifications and Skills
  • Experience in optics manufacturing with knowledge in generation, polishing, or similar precision fabrication processes.
  • Knowledge of various optic types, including spherical and aspherical components.
  • Knowledge of optical metrology or other precision measurement systems.
  • Experience with MasterCam, G-code, 3D modeling tools, Python, Matlab, or Excel-based analysis.
  • Experience with Lean, DMAIC, or other continuous improvement methodologies.

The range for this position is $84,932.00 - $116,782.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
