Senior Mainframe Operating Systems Engineer


The Team

The Mainframe Operating Systems team is responsible for the engineering, support, stability, security, and modernization of Fidelity's enterprise mainframe platform. The team provides the foundational operating system services that support critical business applications across the organization. By maintaining a secure, resilient, and high-performing platform, the team enables business areas to deliver services to customers with confidence and reliability.

As a Senior Mainframe Operating Systems Engineer, you will work closely with infrastructure teams, application development teams, architecture teams and software vendors. The team is focused on maintaining operational excellence, keeping software current, implementing new technologies, and continuously improving the mainframe environment through automation and modernization initiatives.

You will be part of a collaborative team that values technical expertise, innovation, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing while supporting one of the industry's largest and most sophisticated mainframe environments.


The Expertise You Have

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • 5 - 8+ years of hands-on experience supporting IBM z/OS operating systems in a systems programming or operating systems engineering role.

  • Experience administering and supporting large-scale enterprise mainframe environments.

  • 5+ years experience installing, customizing, upgrading, and maintaining IBM and Independent Software Vendor software products using SMP/E.

  • Experience supporting Parallel Sysplex environments, Coupling Facilities, and high-availability mainframe architectures.

  • Experience supporting software products including Top Secret, Control-M, MFX, CA-1, Endevor, z/OSMF, System Automation, NetView, OMEGAMON, SYSVIEW, Mobius, and related technologies.

  • Experience with z/OS Unix System Services (USS), JCL, REXX, Python, and shell scripting (KSH/SH) to automate operational and engineering activities.

  • Experience with change management, incident management, problem management, and software lifecycle practices.

  • Experience working directly with software vendors to resolve technical issues and perform root cause analysis.

  • Experience supporting disaster recovery solutions including GDPS, Global Mirror, and Metro Mirror.

  • Experience with modern mainframe tooling, automation frameworks, DevOps practices, and platform engineering concepts.

  • Supporting the stability, availability, security, and performance of Fidelity's enterprise z/OS operating system environment.

  • Installing, customizing, upgrading, and maintaining IBM and Independent Software Vendor software products while ensuring software currency and platform resiliency.

  • Leading operating system upgrades, software maintenance activities, technology refresh initiatives, and infrastructure modernization efforts.

  • Automating operational processes utilizing JCL, REXX, Python, Ansible, and other platform engineering tools to improve efficiency and reduce operational risk.

  • Supporting critical incident resolution, problem determination, root cause analysis, and production support activities for business-critical systems.

  • Advancing modern mainframe capabilities through technologies such as z/OSMF, Zowe, GitHub Enterprise, APIs, IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Python, and contemporary development practices.

  • Supporting emerging technologies and modernization initiatives including z/OS Container Extensions (zCX), IBM Wazi, event-driven automation, and developer productivity solutions.

  • Participating in disaster recovery planning, testing, and resiliency improvements utilizing GDPS, Global Mirror, and Metro Mirror technologies.

  • Improving platform observability, monitoring, automation, and operational excellence through proactive engineering practices and modern monitoring solutions.

  • Providing technical leadership, mentoring team members, and partnering with business, technology, vendor, and application development teams to deliver reliable infrastructure services.

Fidelity's Onsite Working Model
Fidelity is transitioning to a full-time onsite working model through a phased rollout across regions and roles. Currently, some roles and locations require 100% onsite presence, while others require less. Onsite expectations are likely to evolve as the rollout continues. This transition does not apply to fully remote roles.
