What is a Full Time Narrative Designer?

A Full Time Narrative Designer is a professional in the video game industry who is responsible for developing and integrating the story, dialogue, and narrative elements into a game. They work closely with game designers, writers, and artists to create immersive story experiences that align with the game's mechanics and world. Narrative Designers ensure that the storyline, character arcs, and player choices are cohesive and engaging throughout the gameplay. Their role often involves writing scripts, designing branching storylines, and collaborating with other teams to bring the narrative vision to life. This position is a full-time role, meaning the designer is employed on a regular, ongoing basis rather than on a freelance or contract basis.

How do Narrative Designers typically collaborate with other departments in a game development studio?

Narrative Designers work closely with various teams, including game designers, artists, audio specialists, and programmers, to ensure that the story integrates seamlessly with gameplay and visuals. Regular meetings and iterative feedback sessions are common, allowing Narrative Designers to adapt story elements based on technical constraints or gameplay changes. This collaborative environment requires strong communication skills and flexibility, as narrative ideas often need to evolve to fit the project's overall vision.

Game Writers primarily craft scripts, dialogues, and specific story elements. While their skills overlap, Narrative Designers have a broader role in shaping the game's narrative framework.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Narrative Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Narrative Designer, you need a strong background in creative writing, storytelling, and narrative structure, often supported by a degree in English, Creative Writing, or a related field. Job Requirements:

  • Lead brand voice and narrative direction, concept development, and execution across Brand Centers of Excellence.

  • Define and evolve brand narrative frameworks and language systems that scale across channels.

  • Bring perspective to the work by connecting audience insight, culture, and performance learnings.

  • Help shape both long-term and seasonal narrative direction in partnership with creative leadership.

  • Work in close partnership with an Art Director and Associate Creative Director to lead ideas from concept through execution, collaborating with designers, producers, account teams, and external partners along the way.

  • Present work with conviction, clarity, and a strong strategic point of view.

  • Guide freelance writers to ensure consistency, quality, and tone.

  • Contribute to a high bar, collaborative creative culture.

  • And, of course, find inspiration in the mountains.

What You’ll Bring

  • Strong conceptual thinking and the ability to shape brand narratives, not just individual assets.

  • Ability to deliver storytelling ranging from high-level narrative and campaign concepts to precise, channel‑specific execution.

  • Mastery of voice and tone, with sound judgment on how and when language elevates the work.

  • Clear understanding of holistic, multi‑channel marketing and integrated storytelling.

  • Strong cultural fluency and judgment around relevance, tone, and audience context.

  • Ability to bridge strategy and execution with confidence.

  • Comfort navigating complexity, feedback, and multiple projects at once.

  • Collaborative mindset and a sharp point of view on creative quality.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in copywriting, brand creative, agency and/or in-house environments.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to craft distinctive, high-quality copy.
