What is a full time nanny?

Full time nannies are professional caregivers who provide consistent, daily care for children in a family's home. Their responsibilities often include supervising children, preparing meals, engaging in educational activities, and sometimes light housekeeping related to the children. Full time nannies typically work 30-50 hours per week, depending on the family's needs. They play an important role in supporting children's development and offering reliable care while parents are at work or otherwise occupied.

What does a full time nanny do?

Full-time nannies care for children in the children's home. They are responsible for the kid’s daily needs and activities, allowing the parents to go to work and fulfill other obligations. Nannies who work full-time log at least forty hours a week, typically during the parents' working hours. But their hours may not be regular office hours; some families have nannies come early in the morning to help with the morning rush or stay at night until the children go to bed. As a full-time time nanny, your job duties may include preparing meals, bathing and dressing the children, arranging playdates, accompanying children to activities, and helping with schoolwork. When the children are in school, full-time nannies may also help with dropping off and picking up the kids and perform light housework.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Nanny, you need experience in childcare, knowledge of child development, and often certifications such as CPR and first aid. Familiarity with child safety equipment, household management apps, and daily activity planning tools is typically required. Patience, reliability, and excellent communication skills help you build strong relationships with both children and parents. These abilities ensure a safe, nurturing, and structured environment that supports children's well-being and family needs.

What are some common challenges a full time nanny may face when balancing the needs of multiple children in a household?

Full-time nannies often care for siblings of different ages, which can mean juggling varying schedules, developmental milestones, and activity preferences. Managing conflicts between children, ensuring each child receives individual attention, and adapting daily routines to accommodate their unique needs can be challenging. Successful nannies use strong organizational skills, clear communication with parents, and creative problem-solving to foster a positive, nurturing environment for all children in their care.

What is the difference between Full Time Nanny vs Live-in Nanny?

AspectFull Time NannyLive-in Nanny
Work EnvironmentTypically works in the employer's home during scheduled hoursResides in the employer's home, working both day and night shifts
CredentialsOften requires childcare certifications, background checks, and experienceSimilar credentials as Full Time Nanny, with additional housing responsibilities
Employment SetupPaid hourly or salary, with designated working hoursPaid salary, with housing included as part of compensation

While both Full Time Nannies and Live-in Nannies provide childcare in private homes, the key difference lies in their living arrangements. Full Time Nannies work during scheduled hours and live elsewhere, whereas Live-in Nannies reside in the employer's home, offering more flexible or around-the-clock care. Both roles often require similar credentials and experience, but the living situation impacts work hours and responsibilities.

Job description

Overview

NEW YORK, NY | TRIBECA (LOCAL NYC CANDIDATES ONLY) - A warm, intellectually engaged family of four in the heart of Tribeca is seeking a full-time, long-term nanny to become a genuine and invested presence in their children's daily lives. This family is only considering candidates who are already local to New York City, familiar with navigating the city, and comfortable working in Manhattan. This is not a background role. The family is looking for someone who shows up ready to engage, connects naturally with young children, and understands that the best caregiving looks a lot like great company.

Their daughter is 5, and their son is 3. Both are silly, sweet, and imaginative. Their daughter is bright, curious, and observant - thoughtful and engaged, with a real interest in the people and ideas around her, their son is a spirited three-year-old finding his footing, and both light up with the right kind of attention. The family places a high value on early childhood development, meaningful conversation, and helping their children grow into kind, curious, well-mannered people. A caregiver who can hold their attention, play with genuine enthusiasm, and teach through interaction rather than instruction will thrive here.

The family is based in Tribeca and plans to stay downtown. Their daughter will be attending school on the Upper East Side, with transportation still to be determined. Their son attends preschool downtown with pickup around 3:00 to 4:00pm. The nanny will need to be a true team player as these logistics come together - flexible and solutions-oriented rather than rigid about routine. Core hours are 11:00am to 7:00pm, Monday-Friday, with flexibility for evenings, weekends, and schedule shifts as the family's needs dictate. The family has a home in Pennsylvania they visit on weekends and takes several trips throughout the year, so openness to occasional travel with the family is appreciated.

Day-to-day responsibilities include full childcare, family meal preparation and planning, grocery shopping, children's laundry, light housekeeping, errand running, and coordinating playdates with other children and nannies. When mom is home and working, the nanny is expected to keep the children engaged and active, inside and outside the home. This is a role that moves, and the right candidate will move with it comfortably. A driver's license is a meaningful bonus. Candidates from the outer boroughs are welcome, provided they are already familiar with Manhattan and the commute to Tribeca is reasonable.

The family is seeking a college-educated candidate with warm, big-sister energy, strong conversational skills, and a genuine interest in early childhood development. Mandarin is a nice-to-have but not required. MMR vaccination is preferred. Comfort with an NDA is a plus, though not required.

Benefits include paid sick days, paid holidays, and 10 days PTO split evenly between the family and the nanny's discretion. Compensation is $37-50 gross per hour, commensurate with experience.

Candidates who lead with warmth, bring energy and ideas, and are excited to be a real part of a family's everyday life are encouraged to apply.
