Job description

Randolph-Macon College seeks a full-time Eventing Team Coach to lead its thriving program at the RMC Equestrian Center, located three miles from campus in Ashland, VA. The facility features three arenas, including a large show jumping arena with Premier Equestrian footing, a dedicated dressage arena, an indoor arena, outdoor lighting, and a 36-stall barn.

Reporting directly to the Director of Equestrian Program, this position offers the opportunity to coach a dynamic diverse group of riders. The Coach will also partner with the Director to recruit prospective students and support all aspects of managing a successful equestrian program.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide instruction in the fundamentals of riding, specifically Eventing, including, position, balance, and technique, both in dressage and over fences to enhance performance and ensure the safety of both horse and rider
  • Provide a minimum of 30 lessons per week (on average over 50 weeks) to students and non-students, and maintain accurate, up-to-date lesson schedules and billing records
  • Develop individualized training plans for horses and riders to ensure fitness, preparedness, and progression through multiple levels of Eventing competition
  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with coaching staff and clients while assessing individual developmental needs and providing coaching, mentoring, and guidance to enhance horsemanship skills
  • Coordinate team competitions and college-hosted events, including selecting and preparing team members for intercollegiate competition
  • Provide coaching at competitions by evaluating jumping courses, developing strategic ride plans tailored to horse and rider abilities, and delivering post-competition assessments
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the success of the equestrian program

Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree (or equivalent experience) in Coaching, Equine Studies, or a related field
  • Extensive coaching and competitive experience with riders at all levels, including training and competition
  • Strong knowledge of horse care, training methods, fitness conditioning, and veterinary management of upper-level event horses
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Eventing competition rules and regulations
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, veterinarians, and farriers to develop a complete care plan for competition horses
  • Demonstrated success in teaching and coaching both youth and adults riders over time
  • Ability to interact professionally and courteously with students, colleagues, and the broader College community
  • Team-oriented, hands-on approach with willingness to support additional duties as directed by the Director
  • Valid driver's license (meets insurance requirements) with experience safely hauling horse trailers
