Job description

Carnegie Mellon University is a private, global research university that stands among the world's most renowned education institutions. With ground-breaking brain science, path-breaking performances, creative start-ups, big data, big ambitions, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn't imagine the future, we invent it. If you're passionate about joining a community that challenges the curious to deliver work that matters, your journey starts here!

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) ranks among the best in the country. Our research programs are at the forefront of the technologies that have changed the world we live in. Our interdisciplinary approach to education and research allows faculty and student across the university and beyond to collaborate on problems that have a significant impact on the world around us.

Carnegie Mellon University's department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is looking for a talented postdoc/research scientist to work on an innovative project, involving the design, microfabrication and benchtop characterization of neural interfaces for multimodal recording and stimulation of the central and peripheral nervous system. The postdoctoral researcher is also expected to develop the backend electronics for neural recording and stimulation. This is part of an interdisciplinary project involving multimodal recording and stimulation from cells in the gut.

This position may be filled as part-time (# hours) or full-time (37.5 hours per week), depending on candidate availability.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research aligned with the themes above
  • Mentor PhD and MS students
  • Lead and co-author publications
  • Optionally participate in workshop organization or broader impacts activities
  • Other duties as assigned.

Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. We are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

Required Skills:

  • Microfabrication on rigid and flexible polymer substrates (photolithography, metal evaporation, etching)
  • Experience with packaging schemes such as flip-chip bonding, anisotropic conductive film bonding and wire bonding
  • Finite element Method (FEM) simulations (MEMS, Electro-static and Quasi-static simulations)
  • Discrete electronic design (Analog and digital design using COTS, schematic and layout design, microcontroller programming, PCB prototyping)
  • Experimental data analysis in Python or MATTLAB

Qualifications:

  • PhD required
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
