Industry

Food Manufacturing, vegetable processing

Plant Overview

  • Non-union facility
  • Approximately 41 full-time employees
  • Maintenance team consists of 13 mechanics and 3 electricians
  • Small-plant environment where mechanics own responsibility for assigned areas
  • Not a legacy family plant, but a hands-on, accountability-driven culture

Schedule Overview

This role operates on a seasonal schedule tied to vegetable pack season.

Manufacturing or industrial background is NOT required. Strong mechanical aptitude is required and can come from other industries.

Off-Pack Season Schedule

  • Day shift only
  • 4x10 schedule
  • Monday through Thursday
  • 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Off-pack typically runs from shortly after pack season ends until 1 to 2 weeks before the next pack season

Pack Season Schedule

  • Estimated mid-June through early to mid-October, varies year to year
  • 6x12 schedule
  • Will either be placed on day or night shift based on experience level and plant needs.
  • Day shift: 5:45 AM to 6:15 PM
  • Night shift: 5:45 PM to 6:15 AM
  • Shift assignments are not seniority-based
  • Days off rotate with other mechanics within assigned plant areas
  • Night shift typically begins 1 to 2 weeks before full production and continues briefly after production ends for shutdown activities

Pack season is demanding and must be fully understood before accepting the role.

Pay

  • $28 to $32/hr based on experience and demonstrated mechanical ability
  • $0.30/hr night shift differential
  • Overtime paid for hours over 40 hr and during pack season

No mid-year raises. Annual wage increases align with the company fiscal cycle and are typically effective May 1.

Role Summary

This is a hands-on mechanical role supporting a seasonal, high-volume vegetable processing facility. Primary focus is keeping production equipment running during pack season and maintaining, repairing, and preparing equipment during the off-season.

Mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting ability, and accountability matter more than industry-specific experience or formal certifications.

What You Will Do

  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical issues during production to minimize downtime
  • Perform preventive maintenance and document completed PMs
  • Own responsibility for assigned production areas during pack season
  • Support operators by ensuring equipment is running safely and efficiently
  • Repair, maintain, and install processing and packaging equipment
  • Read manuals, schematics, and technical documentation to complete repairs
  • Inspect equipment for wear, failure risk, and safety concerns
  • Complete mechanical repairs and adjustments during off-pack periods
  • Prepare equipment for pack season startup and post-season shutdown
  • Follow all plant safety rules, GMPs, and food safety requirements
  • Support additional maintenance needs as assigned

Welding and machining are not primary requirements for this role.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on troubleshooting ability
  • Experience may come from non-manufacturing environments such as automotive, farm equipment, general mechanical repair, or similar fields
  • Ability to diagnose problems and follow step-by-step repair processes
  • Comfort working long hours during peak seasonal operations
  • Ability to work collaboratively with operators, supervisors, and leadership
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills
  • Reliable attendance and ability to commute during winter conditions

Nice-to-Have Experience

  • Prior exposure to production or processing equipment
  • Preventive maintenance experience
  • Seasonal or peak-operation work environments

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Company-paid short-term disability
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Additional voluntary benefits available
