Job description
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) is the City agency responsible for regulating for-hire transportation in New York City, including taxis, street hail liveries, high-volume for-hire services such as Uber and Lyft, black cars, luxury limousines, livery vehicles, commuter vans, and paratransit vehicles.
The New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) oversees a transportation ecosystem that moves nearly 1 million riders every single day the equivalent of the entire Boston transit system. TLC is the agency responsible for regulating New York City's taxicab and for-hire vehicle industry. With approximately 180,000 licensed drivers, 1,000 businesses, 115,000 vehicles including and the iconic yellow taxi at the heart of our city's identity, TLC is entering a new era of dignity, accountability, and collaboration across the for hire vehicle sector. TLC continues to be on the front lines of a rapidly changing mobility landscape and our innovative efforts--whether requiring minimum pay for app drivers, ensuring wheelchair accessible service, making our licensed fleet more environmentally sustainable, working to eliminate traffic fatalities, or preventing discriminatory service--often serve as a model for other cities.
TLC seeks a highly motivated, solutions-oriented professional to serve as Special Assistant to the Chair and Commissioner. As the Commissioner's right hand, you will help drive key priorities: dignity for drivers and passengers, corporate accountability, and a transportation system that works seamlessly for all.
The Commissioner is deeply engaged with the licensee community, regularly meeting drivers and industry members many of them small business owners. The Special Assistant will be essential to making a mobile, high-visibility Commissioner's Office run smoothly. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in dynamic environments, is comfortable moving across the City, excels at rapid problem-solving, and is ready to take on responsibilities requiring significant discretion.
You will be at the heart of an agency that shapes daily life for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, gaining unmatched exposure to executive decision making, city operations, and community engagement. For the right candidate, this role can be a launchpad into public service or civic innovation.
Key Responsibilities
Executive Support & Daily Operations
- Serve as the Commissioner's primary aide, accompanying them to meetings, site visits, and community events. Capture notes and action items; ensure timely follow through across teams.
- Manage daily flow: schedules, briefing materials, transitions, and real time adjustments in close coordination with the Executive Assistant.
- Prepare the Commissioner by reviewing materials, identifying gaps, and clarifying decisions and follow ups.
Communications & Coordination
- Draft follow ups, summaries, talking points, and briefing materials.
- Work with internal divisions to gather information, resolve issues, and advance initiatives.
- Maintain strict discretion and professional judgment.
Commissioner Engagement & Field Presence
- Support the Commissioner's visible presence with drivers, passengers, elected officials, and industry leaders. Manage logistics for external engagements, including stakeholder context, digital photos, content needs, and follow ups.
- Anticipate and coordinate all physical readiness needs for the Commissioner, including changes of clothes, cultural and community event considerations, weather-related preparations, holding items, getting food or beverages, and other necessary tasks for seamless participation in engagements throughout the City.
- Route issues identified in the field to the appropriate division and track them through resolution.
- Build rapport with drivers and industry stakeholders; elevate insights to leadership.
Special Projects & Strategic Initiatives
- Lead or support cross-agency projects assigned by the Commissioner or Chief of Staff. Track project progress and ensure deliverables are met.
- Coordinate with the Chief of Staff to align priorities, deadlines, and initiatives.
- Conduct research and prepare memos and presentations for policy, operational, or community initiatives.
