Description
Under general supervision, the Lifeguard II role serves as a senior, experienced lifeguard who supports daily aquatic operations, safety enforcement, and team leadership while maintaining primary responsibility for patron safety. Assists in training and leading Lifeguard I staff. Performs technical tasks to ensure the safety of all pool patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies, monitoring swimming pool activities, enforcing water safety rules and regulations, and performing pool maintenance in compliance with policies and procedures. Provides instruction to patrons in water aerobics, swim lessons, swim team, and water safety.
Essential Job Functions
Performs duties to ensure the safety of all pool patrons by preventing, recognizing and responding to emergencies, monitoring swimming pool activities, enforcing water safety rules and regulations, and performing pool maintenance in compliance with policies and procedures.
Communicates operational concerns, incidents, and patron issues; performs related administrative tasks, completes logs, incident reports, and related documents and inventory records; ability to effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, with staff and patrons; follow up with appropriate staff to resolve patron issues or elevate to management when necessary; coordinate with lifeguards to provide necessary notifications, signage, equipment, and preparation to ensure patron safety and accessibility; understand and follow federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.
Conducts routine inspections of aquatics center, including ladders, handles, and steps; ensures pool and pool equipment are clean, secured, and free of debris; ensures deck is clean and free of hazardous conditions; ensures equipment is safe for use; ensures all chemicals and cleaning supplies are stored properly with doors labeled and locked; monitors chemical storage area and pool area.
Performs and assigns routine cleaning tasks to maintain the pool and deck areas, including locker rooms, sauna, and public use areas; responsible for proper pool setup for events, meets, and programs; ensures lifeguard stands are clean; empties trash; cleans floors.
Assist with opening and closing procedures; support deck rotations and coverage during breaks to maintain safety and compliance; provide guidance to staff; model professional behavior; maintain strong rescue skills; assist with correction when safety concerns are observed.
Plans, conducts, and instructs in-service training, drills, and skills as directed; help identify performance issues and participate in skill evaluations as requested.
Work shifts vary based on season, events, and programs assigned throughout the year and will include mornings, evenings, and weekends; some holidays may be required.
Requires experience and knowledge in the areas of aquatic recreation, recreation facility operations and customer service.
Must have the ability to work a variety of shifts, including early morning, late evenings and weekends, to accommodate the hours of the facility and operational needs.
May review and complete documents
May make recommendations to the Aquatics Coordinator for compliance with policies and procedures of the Lifeguard I staff.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required
Education and Experience:
High School Education or equivalent is desirable; and
Experience as lifeguard, supervisory experience preferred, pool maintenance knowledge preferred; or
Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Licenses and Certifications (depending upon assignment):
Lifeguard- American Red Cross, CPR, First Aid
Desirable:
CPO (Certified Pool Operator) and/or AFO (Aquatics Facility Operator), Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor

WHEN BENEFITS BEGIN
Benefits are available to all eligible employees and dependents following the applicable waiting period:
  • Benefits begin first of the month following 30 days after date of hire
  • Part-time employees who work thirty (30) hours per week on a regular basis are eligible to participate in the City medical insurance program the same as the 40-hour employees.
