A Full Time Level 2 Software Engineer is a professional who typically has some experience beyond an entry-level role and is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining software applications. Level 2 engineers often work on more complex tasks than junior engineers, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and may help mentor less-experienced colleagues. They are usually expected to write clean, efficient code, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to the overall success of software projects. This position is generally full-time, meaning a standard workweek (e.g., 40 hours per week) with benefits provided by the employer.

Designs, develops, documents, tests, and debugs software that contains logical and mathematical solutions to business/mission problems or questions in computer language for solutions by means of data processing equipment. Applies the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the development life cycle. Applies knowledge of computer hardware and software, subject matter to be programmed in business/mission applications, information processing techniques used, and information gathered from system users to develop software. Corrects program errors, prepares operating instructions, compiles documentation of program development, and analyzes system capabilities to resolve questions of program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques, and controls. Ensures software standards are met.
WHO WE ARE
The ISR UAS division of Lockheed Martin Skunk Works is seeking world class software engineers to join a team that continues our 80-year legacy of pioneering advanced aircraft. Our Mission Processing engineers design, develop, and integrate software that powers the flight control, navigation, sensor-fusion, and communications subsystems of cutting-edge unmanned aircraft. We operate in a highly innovative, multi-site environment where speed, modularity, and reusability are paramount.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will support the development and maintenance of platform-level software for ISR and UAS systems. In this role you will build and maintain deployable system images and runtime environments, bundling operating-system components, middleware, and platform services into validated volumes. You will collaborate closely with software, systems, and security teams to ensure the infrastructure is reliable, repeatable, and secure, and you will provide ongoing troubleshooting and enhancements that keep the platform stable and ready for rapid field deployment.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU
Working directly with middleware and platform-level infrastructure will give you hands-on technical experience and deep expertise in the core software that powers ISR and UAS missions. You'll participate in system configuration, service integration, and image creation activities, expanding your knowledge across the entire software lifecycle. Daily collaboration with seasoned engineers from software, integration, and test teams provides mentorship that accelerates your professional growth, while your contributions will directly impact the reliability and agility of cutting edge unmanned systems supporting critical missions. This high visibility work also builds a strong portfolio that prepares you for future roles within the organization and the wider engineering community.
YOUR IMPACT
By supporting Mission Processing software, you create the reliable foundation that enables ISR and UAS systems to execute complex missions. • Assist with integrating middleware and system services into runtime volumes
  • Support configuration management and system initialization tasks
  • Develop and maintain scripts to assist with image creation and validation
  • Support integration and deployment activities in lab and test environments
  • Participate in peer code reviews and technical discussions

  • Experience in C++, Bash shell, or Python
  • Experience with Linux operating systems (Red Hat preferred)
  • Familiarity with GitLab CI/CD pipelines for automated builds, tests, and deployments

Must be a US Citizen. This position is located at a facility that requires special access and a Secret clearance updated within the last 5 years to be considered.
Desired Skills
  • Experience building and debugging applications in Linux based development environments
  • Exposure to build environments and tools such as Make and CMake
  • Exposure to hardware and software integration
  • Exposure to scripting, automation, or build tooling
  • Exposure to version control systems and team-based development workflows
  • Familiarity with Agile workflow tools and collaborative version-control practices (Git, JIRA, Confluence, etc.)
  • Willingness to learn and work in complex software environments
  • Current Security+ certification or the ability to obtain it
