TOOL ROOM TECHNICIAN
Plastic Injection Mold amp; Tool Maintenance/Repair
REPORTS TO Maintenance Manager
Position Summary
The Tool Room Technician maintains, repairs and improves plastic injection molds, dies, tools, fixtures and related equipment. This hands-on role supports preventive maintenance and production reliability through precision machining, mold troubleshooting, inspection and safe material handling. The technician works independently and with engineers, maintenance and production team members to return tooling to service and ensure it performs to specification.
Key Responsibilities
•Perform preventive maintenance, die washing and polishing on plastic injection molds and dies.
•Troubleshoot and repair molds, dies, tools, jigs and fixtures; disassemble, inspect, restore and reassemble components as required.
•Set up and operate lathes, milling machines, grinders, shapers and related tool room equipment to drill, mill, grind, shape and finish metal parts; smooth surfaces and heat-treat components when required.
•Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, models, schematics and specifications to determine materials, dimensions, machine requirements and assembly sequences.
•Measure, mark and machine stock; verify dimensions, alignments, clearances and finished-part conformance using appropriate precision measuring equipment.
•Fit and assemble parts into tools, fixtures, molds and mechanisms; connect wiring and hydraulic lines to injection molds and support mold setup activities as assigned.
•Inspect and test completed tooling and equipment for defects, wear, damage, proper setup and efficient operation; make approved adjustments to meet specifications.
•Use overhead cranes, forklifts, die carts and hoists to move and position molds, dies and machined components safely between the tool room and press area.
•Recommend practical design or construction improvements to tooling, dies, jigs and fixtures; develop sketches or specifications for specialty tools when assigned.
•Maintain a safe, clean and organized work area and follow all applicable safety and operating procedures.
Required Qualifications
•High school diploma or GED.
•Five to ten years of relevant experience in plastic injection molding as a toolmaker, die maker or tool fitter, including at least three years repairing and maintaining plastic injection molding tooling.
•Experience building or repairing fixtures, jigs, dies, molds, cutting tools, gauges and other manufacturing tooling.
•Experience setting up plastic injection molding machines.
•Working knowledge of machining practices, metallic properties, geometry, trigonometry and algebra, with the ability to safely and accurately operate machining and precision measuring equipment.
•Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, analytical judgment and problem-solving skills.
•Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with engineers and team members at all levels.
•Clear verbal and written communication skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office or related software, and the ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced environment with a continuous-improvement mindset.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
•Work in an active manufacturing and tool room environment around machinery, molds, dies and material-handling equipment.
•Stand, walk, bend, squat and stoop for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.
•Lift and move up to 50 pounds as needed, with or without reasonable accommodation.
•Maintain flexibility to work overtime based on business and production needs.
