Title: Surgical Services General Surgeon

Effective Date: June 26, 2026

Supervisor: CEO/CMO

Department: Surgical Services

FLSA Status: Exempt

Principal duties and responsibilities

1. Performs a broad range of general surgical procedures including, but not limited to, abdominal, gastrointestinal, soft tissue, breast, and emergency surgeries.

2. Evaluates, diagnoses, and develops treatment plans for patients requiring surgical intervention.

3. Provides pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care to surgical patients.

4. Collaborates with primary care providers, specialists, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated patient care.

5. Responds to surgical consults and participates in on-call coverage as assigned.

6. Maintains accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).

7. Educates patients and families on surgical procedures, risks, recovery expectations, and follow-up care.

8. Adheres to all hospital policies, quality standards, and safety protocols.

9. Participates in quality improvement initiatives, peer reviews, and medical staff meetings.

10. Develops, administers, and promotes surgical services through community outreach, physician relations, and marketing initiatives.

11. Works collaboratively with hospital administration to support growth and strategic development of surgical services.

12. Collaborates with surgical staff, advanced practice providers, and other clinical personnel as needed.

13. Responsible for ensuring the environment meets appropriate governing body standards.

14. Ensures patients and visitors follow current infection control guidelines.

15. Maintains patient and staff safety through the use of patient safety tools (TeamSTEPPS, Just Culture, etc).

16. Communicates with multidisciplinary team to ensure patient-centered holistic care.

17. Participates in different committees as assigned.

18. Regular attendance at the assigned work location is required.

19. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities

1. Holds a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.

2. Completes an accredited General Surgery residency program.

3. Maintains Board Certification or Board Eligibility in General Surgery.

4. Possesses or obtains an active and unrestricted Nebraska medical license prior to start.

5. Maintains or obtains current DEA registration.

6. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of surgical techniques, procedures, and patient care standards.

7. Applies strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills.

8. Communicates effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.

9. Works effectively in a team-based, fast-paced healthcare environment.

10. Demonstrates a commitment to patient safety, quality care, and continuous improvement.

11. Current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support certifications via American Heart Association required.

12. Represents the facility accurately, honestly, and acts with integrity and in the best interest of the facility while practicing by the mission and vision.

13. Maintains harmonious relationships within the department and among coworkers, providing support and assistance to co-workers to ensure quality patient care.

14. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with regard to protected and sensitive information.

15. Ability to complete reports and correspondence at a professional level.

16. Ability to immediately respond to common inquiries and complaints from patients, employees, and regulatory agencies.

17. Ability to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

18. Successful completion of required knowledge and training of standard precaution and transmission protocols and when to apply during principal duties and responsibilities.

Working conditions

1. Stands for extended periods and performs physically demanding procedures.

2. Encounters exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases and follows standard precautions.

3. Functions in a high-stress environment requiring critical thinking and rapid decision-making.

4. Exposure to infections, communicable, and contagious diseases up to 75% of work time. Exposure to risk of bloodborne diseases, high steam pressure and radiological environment up to 75% of work time. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, anesthetic waste gases, medications, body fluids, and waste up to 75% of work time. Exposure to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment up to 75% of work time. Subject to burns and cuts.

5. Exposure to chemicals and other hazards related to patient care. Appropriate safety precautions, such as safety glasses, gloves, etc. must be used to minimize risk of injury.

6. Direct exposure to body substances during patient care activities and on contaminated surfaces such as patient equipment.
