Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Forensic Science has recently moved to a new, state-of-the-art facility in Hanover County. The facility houses staff from the Central Laboratory, Division of Technical Services, Director's Office, Administrative Offices, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The Virginia Department of Forensic Science (DFS) is seeking a qualified full-time Forensic Laboratory Specialist III to join the Division of Technical Services within the Toxicology Program Area. The successful candidate will be responsible for receiving, storing, and performing immunoassay drug screening on non-evidentiary blood samples. This role supports the DFS Quality Assurance (QA) Program through the preparation and maintenance of critical reagents, appropriate operation of laboratory instrumentation, and diligent safeguarding of specimen integrity.
Additional responsibilities may include supporting the Toxicology discipline, assisting with Evidence Receiving functions, and providing support for other departmental needs as directed/coordinated by the Toxicology Program Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
โ€ข Knowledge of basic theoretical principles and applications of the instrumentation and methodologies used to preserve and analyze toxicology samples
โ€ข Experience working in a scientific laboratory environment, including standard laboratory equipment, techniques, laboratory safety procedures, and operating and maintaining laboratory instrumentation
โ€ข Experience preparing solutions and reagents for use in a laboratory setting
โ€ข Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs
โ€ข Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner, both verbally and in writing
โ€ข Ability to maintain accurate records, analyze and interpret data, follow written protocols and oral instructions, manage multiple tasks efficiently, establish work priorities, and independently perform routine duties
โ€ข Valid driver's license and/or other means of reliable transportation
Additional Considerations
โ€ข Experience performing and documenting QA procedures
โ€ข Experience handling biological fluids in a forensic or clinical toxicology laboratory
โ€ข Experience working in a laboratory environment performing qualitative and quantitative alcohol or drug testing
โ€ข Experience using laboratory information management software
โ€ข Experience working in an accredited forensic science laboratory
