About The Role:

Reporting to the Vice President, Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer, the Director Finance & Controller provides strategic and operational leadership for Bethany's accounting, financial operations, and financial planning and analysis functions within a complex continuing care and seniors' services organization, ensuring financial stewardship supports high-quality resident care, regulatory compliance, and organizational sustainability. Proven success leading finance functions at the Director level or equivalent senior leadership role is required.
The position emphasizes forward-looking financial analysis, accounting integrity, effective business partnership, sound financial controls, disciplined processes, and service excellence to support strategic decision-making and stewardship of organizational resources.

What You Will Do:

Reporting to the Vice President, Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer, you will:

Financial Planning and Analysis

  • Lead organization-wide operating and capital budgets, incorporating resident occupancy, labour utilization, provincial funding, and long-term strategic planning for continuing care operations.

  • Oversee rolling forecasts, multi-year financial plans, and scenario modelling.

  • Analyze financial and operational results to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.

  • Support business cases, investment evaluations, and funding decisions.

Financial Reporting

  • Provide financial reporting and analysis to Executive Leadership Team, the Finance & Audit Committee, and the Board of Directors, translating financial results into operational insights.

  • Lead management discussion and analysis (MD&A).

  • Ensure reporting complies with organizational and external requirements.

Financial Operations

  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, revenue recognition, and reconciliations.

  • Maintain effective financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Lead the internal controls over financial reporting program.

  • Coordinate external audits and audit readiness.

  • Ensure compliance with the Continuing Care Act, funding agreements, not-for-profit reporting requirements, internal controls, and external audit standards.

Financial Systems and Continuous Improvement

  • Optimize Workday and related financial systems.

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives across Finance.

Treasury and Cash Management

  • Monitor cash flow and liquidity.

  • Partner with the CFO on banking and working capital.

Team Leadership and Service Excellence

  • Develop and coach a high-performing Finance team.

  • Establish clear goals and performance expectations.

  • Partner with operational leaders to support decision-making.

What You Bring:

Education and Professional Credentials

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related discipline.

  • CPA designation (or recognized international equivalent with eligibility for rapid transfer via reciprocal agreements).

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive finance experience, including significant demonstrated experience as a Director or equivalent senior finance leader with responsibility for accounting, FP&A, financial operations, and team leadership.

  • 3+ years in a senior finance leadership role.

  • Experience within continuing care, long-term care, seniors housing, publicly funded healthcare, or another complex healthcare environment is strongly preferred.

  • Experience with ERP systems; Workday is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of healthcare funding models, government grants, accommodation charges, labour cost drivers, and financial stewardship within not-for-profit healthcare organizations.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.

  • Ability to communicate financial information to non-financial audiences.

  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and team development.

  • Commitment to integrity, accountability, and continuous improvement.
