Description
THIS POSITION WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL FILLED
This employee works in the medical department of the Luzerne County Correctional Facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Inmate intake within a 24 hour period.
  • Oversees physician visits with inmates.
  • Packages and distributes all medication to block areas.
  • Administer all injections.
  • Works closely with Dentist and Eye Doctor.
  • Handles all medical emergencies.
  • Drawing of blood as directed by physician for testing of inmates incarcerated in the Facility.
  • Daily routine sick calls for inmates.
  • Constant monitoring of special and/or emergency cases as directed by Facility Physician.
  • Schedule appointments with Dentist and Eye Doctor in house.
  • Proper charting of all physician's orders and medication prescribed.
  • Must be able to cope with critical and/or emergency situations.
  • Follow orders explicitly.
  • Relate to inmates without discrimination of race, creed, color, religion and/or criminal charges.
  • Must abide by all Standard Operating Procedures, rules and regulations, post orders and Code of Ethics governing the Facility.
  • Other duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
When a nurse relieves the nurse on previous tour of duty, both nurses will then inventory all controlled substances, prescribed by the physician. This will be performed before a nurse is relieved from tour of duty. Before the second shift nurse is relieved, she must inventory all controlled substances prescribed by physician with the shift supervisor.
Any direct order given by Administration and/or Supervisor will then become incorporated into the respective job description. This order will be either in written or oral form.
Any Employee, in an extreme emergency, will perform some type of security function within the facility as directed by the Administration/Supervisor. Overtime is a condition of employment and must be able to work overtime when needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • All nurses must be licensed by the State of Pennsylvania.
  • Must be able to comply with PA State Nursing Code of Ethics.
  • Must have the ability to initiate and maintain Intravenous Therapy as prescribed by Physician.

I. Medical Insurance
The coverage begins for the employee the on the first of the month following the first full 30 days of full-time employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Cost to the employee to participate in the plan varies by the coverage selection and the number of dependents; and may be subject to collective bargaining agreement. The employee may also elect to opt out of the County's medical insurance if proof of coverage is provided. Under this arrangement, the employee is provided with an annual opt out payment.
II. Vision and Prescription
The coverage begins for the employee on the first of the month following the first full 30 days of full-time employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Contributions may vary, subject to collective bargaining agreement.
III. Dental Coverage
The coverage begins for the employee on the first of the month following the first full 30 days of full-time employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Contributions may vary, subject to collective bargaining agreement.
IV. Life Insurance
A $50,000 life insurance policy is afforded to full-time employees, unless specified differently in a collective bargaining agreement. It remains in effect as long as the employee is actively employed and terminates upon resignation or retirement.
V. Retirement
All full-time employees and part-time employees working more than 1,000 hours per year qualify for Luzerne County retirement benefits, in which employees must contribute 5% of their earnings, and may choose to add to an additional voluntary contribution, not to exceed an additional 10%.
