Overview
The Staff Engineer III supports and leads geotechnical investigations, pavement investigations, engineering analysis, foundation recommendations, and construction observation.
Responsibilities
  • Independently manage routine geotechnical investigations.
  • Perform engineering analyses including:
    • Retaining walls
    • Pavement design
    • Settlement evaluations
    • Slope stability
  • Prepare geotechnical engineering reports for review.
  • Respond to contractor and client questions regarding recommendations.
  • Coordinate field activities and subcontractors.
  • Prepare permit applications and agency submittals as required.
  • Review construction materials testing reports and technicians' daily reports.
  • Evaluate site soil conditions and develop engineering recommendations.
  • Support proposal preparation and project planning.
  • Provide informal guidance to junior engineers.

Qualifications
Formal Education, Licenses and Certifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • Michigan E.I.T. | F.E. certification or in the process of obtaining certification.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment.

Knowledge and Experience
  • 4-6 years of demonstrated geotechnical engineering experience
  • Thorough knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, practices and methods.
  • Residential, commercial or industrial land development project experience is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of typical computer software programs used for geotechnical engineering design and management.

  • Self-motivated and responsible.
  • Effective written and verbal communication is necessary.
  • Ability to work on several projects concurrently, prioritize work load and cope with tight timelines to meet all deadlines without compromising quality.
  • Proficient with the use of computers including spreadsheets, word processing, and engineering software and ability to prepare electronic design calculation documents.

  • Ability to manage time effectively and demonstrates good time-management skills.

Some outdoor work is required in the survey, inspection and testing at various land use developments, construction sites or public works facilities. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds.
Availability
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and overtime as required.
Travel
Travel will be required to respective job sites and is primarily local during the business day.
