What is a full-time engineering job?

A full-time engineering job typically refers to a professional position in which an engineer works a standard workweek, usually around 40 hours, with benefits such as health insurance and paid time off. Engineers in these positions may specialize in fields like civil, mechanical, electrical, or software engineering, and are responsible for designing, building, testing, and maintaining systems or products. Full-time roles often provide more stability and opportunities for career advancement compared to part-time or contract positions.

What is the difference between Full Time Engineering vs Part Time Engineering?

AspectFull Time EngineeringPart Time Engineering
Work HoursTypically 35-40 hours per weekLess than 30 hours per week
CredentialsUsually requires a bachelor's degree in engineeringMay require similar credentials but often less experience
Work EnvironmentFull-time employment in offices, labs, or on-siteFlexible or reduced hours, often remote or freelance
Employer UsageCompanies hiring full-time engineers for ongoing projectsOrganizations seeking part-time or project-based engineering support

Full Time Engineering involves working standard hours with benefits and job stability, while Part Time Engineering offers flexible hours with potentially less job security. Both roles require engineering credentials but differ mainly in hours and employment structure.

What are some common challenges faced by full-time engineers when working on large, cross-functional projects?

Full-time engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with diverse teams, managing shifting project requirements, and balancing multiple priorities. Effective communication is crucial, as engineers frequently collaborate with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to ensure project goals are met. Adapting to new technologies and keeping up with industry standards can also be demanding but provides valuable growth opportunities. Proactively seeking feedback and leveraging teamwork can help navigate these challenges and contribute to successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full-time engineer?

To thrive as a Full-Time Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, analytical problem-solving, and a relevant degree such as a BS or MS in engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD, MATLAB, SolidWorks) and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) are often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and responding to challenges. These skills and qualifications ensure effective project execution, innovation, and the ability to meet organizational objectives in a competitive field.

Fall Engineering Intern

Odin Dynamics, Inc

Los Angeles, CA โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Job description

About Odin Dynamics
Founded in 2025, Odin Dynamics is a defense technology company building autonomous underwater vehicles that will define the next era of undersea warfare. We are focused on delivering capable, resilient autonomous systems that strengthen the strategic advantage of the United States and its allied navies. We move fast, build real hardware, and operate with the urgency that the mission demands.
About the Role
We're looking for engineering interns across multiple disciplines to join us for the Fall. This isn't a shadow and observe internship, you'll be embedded on a small team working on real vehicle systems, writing real code, designing real hardware, and seeing the results of your work in the lab or in the water.
We're hiring across four tracks:
Software Engineering: Contribute to our autonomy stack, build internal tools, or work on embedded systems that run on vehicle hardware.
Electrical Engineering: Support board design, power systems, sensor integration, or harness and interconnect development.
Mechanical Engineering: Work on structural design, mechanisms, manufacturing support, or vehicle integration and test.
Hardware Engineering: Bridge across electrical and mechanical disciplines, supporting system-level integration, prototyping, and hands-on build and test.
You'll be matched to a track and project based on your skills and interests, but the walls between disciplines are thin here, expect to learn and contribute across boundaries.
What You'll Do
  • Own a meaningful project scoped for the summer with real deliverables that contribute to the vehicle program.
  • Work alongside full-time engineers in your discipline on day-to-day design, build, and test activities.
  • Participate in design reviews, team standups, and engineering discussions.
  • Get hands-on with hardware whether that's assembling boards, machining parts, running tests, or deploying systems in the water.
  • Present your work and results to the engineering team at the end of the internship.

What We're Looking For
  • Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Ocean Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Genuine interest in building physical systems that operate in the real world robots, vehicles, hardware, not just software on a screen.
  • Foundational skills relevant to your track whether that's CAD and fabrication, circuit design and soldering, embedded programming, or full-stack development.
  • A bias toward action, you build things, break things, and figure things out.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, small-team environment where you'll be trusted with real responsibility.
  • U.S. Citizenship.

Nice to Have
  • Personal or academic projects in robotics, autonomous systems, or marine/aerospace engineering.
  • Experience with hands-on prototyping, shop tools, or lab equipment.
  • Prior internship or co-op experience in defense, aerospace, or hardware-focused companies.
  • Familiarity with version control, embedded systems, or CAD/CAE tools.

Why Join Us
Most internships have you working on a side project that never ships. Here, you'll work on systems that go in the ocean and serve the U.S. Navy and our allied partners. If you want an internship where you learn fast, build real things, and contribute to the hardest engineering problems in defense - this is it.
