Controls Design Engineer – Power Transformers

Northern Transformer is a Canadian-owned, fast growing manufacturer of power transformers.  Our team delivers transformers of the highest quality through superior design, quality workmanship and attention to our clients’ individual needs.

Due to the growth of our business, we have an opening for a Controls Designer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a university degree or college diploma in Electrical Engineering and relevant experience.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of the Controls Designer

  • Be familiar with industry standards applicable to the design and manufacturing of power transformers and mobile substations.
  • Understand electrical power protection and control equipment.
  • Understand customer specifications and select proper instruments/devices based on customer needs.
  • Create transformer nameplates, schematics, wiring diagrams and panel layouts.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing team, testing team and client.
  • Attend internal design reviews and as well as customer design review.
  • Prepare information for manufacturing according to design standards and standard operating procedures.
  • Preparation of Bills of Material (BOM) to upload to ERP,
  • Completion of task and design activities on time.
  • Communicate and help others in the engineering team.
  • Anticipate and assist with production processes and procedures to ensure high quality and smooth production. 
  • Assist with trouble shooting and root cause analysis (Engineering, Production & Quality).
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with the company’s values of Quality, Safety and Service and company Environment, Health & Safety procedures and quality management program.

Qualifications:

 

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering equivalent degree or technical experience.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Knowledge in Autocad 2D,
  • Knowledge in Zuken E3 software and or EPLAN Electric P8/ProPanel is a plus.
  • Familiarity with industry standards applicable to design and manufacturing of power transformers.
  • Understanding of transformer relays such as SEL, GE, Beckwith, etc.
  • Understanding of transformer controls & protections.
  • Knowledge and ability to read and understand electric schematic diagrams, multiline & single.
  • Excellent organization, high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • 5+ years of controls design work experience in a power transformer design & manufacturing environment.
