Full Time Educational Game Developer information

What does a full time educational game developer do?

A Full Time Educational Game Developer designs, creates, and tests interactive games that are specifically intended to teach or reinforce educational concepts. They collaborate with educators, subject matter experts, and other developers to ensure the games are both engaging and effective for learning. Their work involves programming, graphic design, user experience design, and sometimes educational content creation or curriculum alignment. These professionals are often employed by educational technology companies, schools, or game development studios focused on learning products.

What are some common challenges faced by full time educational game developers, and how can they be addressed?

Full-time educational game developers often encounter the challenge of balancing engaging gameplay with effective learning outcomes. It can be difficult to ensure that educational objectives are seamlessly integrated without making the game feel forced or less enjoyable. Close collaboration with educators and subject matter experts is crucial to achieve this balance. Additionally, developers may face tight production timelines and the need to iterate based on user feedback, making strong project management and adaptability essential skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time educational game developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Educational Game Developer, you need expertise in game design, programming (often with languages like C# or JavaScript), and an understanding of educational theory, typically supported by a degree in computer science, game design, or a related field. Familiarity with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine, experience with version control systems like Git, and relevant certifications in game development are highly valued. Creativity, strong communication, and collaboration skills help developers work effectively with educators, designers, and other stakeholders to create engaging learning experiences. These skills and qualifications are crucial for developing interactive, effective, and pedagogically sound educational games that meet both technical and instructional goals.

Job description

At Aristocrat, we are on a mission to bring happiness to life through the power of play! As a leading entertainment and content-building company, we are powered by technology and innovation, delivering world-class mobile and casino games to millions of people daily. Our dynamic culture and goal-focused approach develop an inclusive environment where your contributions matter. Joining us as a Staff Engineer, Delivery, you'll play a pivotal role in driving our engineering team's success and ensuring flawless execution of our projects. This is your chance to be part of an ambitious team that values collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous growth!

What You'll Do

Own sprint and achievement planning, ensuring work is accurately sequenced, prioritized, and resourced.

  • Assign tasks across the team based on capacity, technical fit, and business priority.
  • Proactively surface and remove blockers — whether technical, process-related, or cross-team dependencies — before they become delivery risks.
  • Track progress and communicate delivery status clearly to engineering leads and collaborators.
  • Hold the team to consistent, predictable execution and flag risks early.
  • Stay hands-on in the codebase, contributing to features and systems across our analytics and AI platform alongside the team.
  • Conduct detailed, constructive code reviews that raise the quality bar and accelerate team learning.

Contribute to technical build and architecture discussions, helping the team navigate trade-offs and make well-informed decisions.

  • Model and uphold engineering standards around code quality, testing coverage, and documentation.
  • Coordinate with other engineering teams, customer success managers, and project managers to manage cross-functional dependencies and align on priorities.
  • Represent the team's capacity and commitments accurately in planning and refinement ceremonies.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, supporting their technical development and day-to-day confidence.
What We're Looking For
  • 7+ years of professional experience in software development, ideally within data-intensive or analytics-focused products.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and driving delivery within an agile or sprint-based team environment.
  • Hands-on proficiency with Node.js, React, and Python, and experience managing delivery workflows in Jira.
  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle, including build pipelines, version control workflows, and release processes.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and keep multiple workstreams on track without compromising technical quality.
  • Comfortable working with limited direction on complex, ambiguous problems and exercising independent judgement to find solutions.
  • Strong communication skills — able to present delivery status, risks, and technical context clearly to varied audiences.
  • Experience mentoring engineers at earlier career stages and a genuine interest in developing others.
  • Collaborative outlook with the ability to influence and gain the cooperation of peers and senior partners.
