Full Time Editing information

What is full time editing?

Full time editing refers to a professional role where an individual is primarily responsible for reviewing, revising, and improving written content on a full-time basis, typically 35-40 hours per week. Editors ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency in documents such as articles, books, reports, or digital content. This job may involve correcting grammar and punctuation, restructuring sentences, fact-checking, and collaborating with writers or other team members to meet publishing standards and deadlines. Full time editors can work in various industries, including publishing, media, marketing, and corporate communications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full-time editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full-Time Editor, you typically need strong language proficiency, attention to detail, and experience with editing or writing, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with editing software such as Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, and content management systems, as well as knowledge of style guides like AP or Chicago, is essential. Excellent communication, time management, and collaboration skills help editors work effectively with writers and meet deadlines. These skills ensure content accuracy, consistency, and high-quality output, which are vital for maintaining editorial standards and audience trust.

What are some common challenges faced by full-time editors, and how can they be managed effectively?

Full-time editors often juggle tight deadlines, multiple projects, and the need to maintain high editorial standards. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, clear communication with writers and other team members, and the ability to quickly adapt to shifting priorities. Many editors find it helpful to use project management tools, maintain detailed style guides, and schedule regular check-ins with their teams to ensure consistency and efficiency. Building a collaborative relationship with contributors also helps in addressing feedback constructively and meeting publication goals.

Job description

The Vox Media Podcast Network is looking for a Video Editor to support its slate of news and culture shows, working across full-length episodes and shoulder content (including quote cards, clips, and behind-the-scenes videos).

The ideal candidate is meticulous and fast as a technical editor, understands how podcasts move through the modern media ecosystem, and has a strong sense of visual style along with a  portfolio of conceptually bold work.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Execute the editing and visual post-production for full-length podcast episodes distributed on YouTube and video platforms.
  • Translate the personality and pacing of digital creators' shortform videos into a distinct and elevated podcast aesthetic.
  • Design and integrate dynamic motion graphics, lower thirds, captions, and visual cues that enhance narrative and tone.
  • Ensure consistent visual branding through smart use of color, typography, and layout across both longform and shortform edits.
  • Implement split-screen layouts, on-screen text, varied pacing and punch-ins, and other techniques that keep conversations visually engaging and viewer-friendly.
  • Address mixed-location interviews (e.g., Zoom + studio) with creativity - ensuring cohesion and polish across footage types.
  • Collaborate with hosts, producers, and showrunners to iterate quickly and deliver high-quality video content on a regular schedule.
  • Source and incorporate archival video or social content where relevant to deepen storytelling.
  • Stay ahead of podcast video trends and contribute ideas that push visual strategy forward.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
  • 5+ years of experience in podcast or social video production for a media brand or individual talent.
  • Fluency with Premiere Pro, Final Cut, or other video editing programs. Experience with motion design a plus.
  • A keen eye for identifying the planned editing flow during a recording, a well-honed sense of pacing out a show/story arc, and ability to apply these skills on tight deadlines..
  • A portfolio that showcases your ability to shape voice, tone, and rhythm.
  • Comfort integrating motion graphics, typography and on-screen text to enhance clarity, emphasis, or humor.
  • Experience with multi-camera editing and visual storytelling techniques like split-screens, overlays, and animated inserts.
  • Ability to maintain brand consistency while experimenting with new formats and storytelling angles.
  • Passion for building a visual language that lives across platforms in collaboration with varied groups of creative stakeholders.
  • Deep knowledge of the social media landscape and excitement about evolving podcasts as dynamic, multiplatform media products..
