Full Time Editing information

What is full time editing?

Full time editing refers to a professional role where an individual is primarily responsible for reviewing, revising, and improving written content on a full-time basis, typically 35-40 hours per week. Editors ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency in documents such as articles, books, reports, or digital content. This job may involve correcting grammar and punctuation, restructuring sentences, fact-checking, and collaborating with writers or other team members to meet publishing standards and deadlines. Full time editors can work in various industries, including publishing, media, marketing, and corporate communications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full-time editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full-Time Editor, you typically need strong language proficiency, attention to detail, and experience with editing or writing, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with editing software such as Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, and content management systems, as well as knowledge of style guides like AP or Chicago, is essential. Excellent communication, time management, and collaboration skills help editors work effectively with writers and meet deadlines. These skills ensure content accuracy, consistency, and high-quality output, which are vital for maintaining editorial standards and audience trust.

Are full time editors still in demand?

Full-time editors are still in demand across various industries such as publishing, media, and corporate communications, especially as content creation and digital media grow. Skills in editing software, attention to detail, and adaptability to new formats like online content are valuable in this field.

What are some common challenges faced by full-time editors, and how can they be managed effectively?

Full-time editors often juggle tight deadlines, multiple projects, and the need to maintain high editorial standards. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, clear communication with writers and other team members, and the ability to quickly adapt to shifting priorities. Many editors find it helpful to use project management tools, maintain detailed style guides, and schedule regular check-ins with their teams to ensure consistency and efficiency. Building a collaborative relationship with contributors also helps in addressing feedback constructively and meeting publication goals.

Job description

Join The New York Times Editing Residency program. Editors serve a critical function in newsrooms. They make stories better and shepherd the news report forward. The Times is looking for journalists who want to build editing careers. This two-year residency offers a chance for participants to develop and hone their news editing skills, and to work on Times journalism.

We are looking for candidates who are curious, collaborative and committed to excellence. We recommend at least some prior editing experience.

You should expect to work on all types of journalism, including breaking news, and be able to pivot quickly on deadline. You may also edit enterprise stories, visual stories and special projects.

The most competitive candidates will have excellent news judgment, a sharp eye for detail and an interest in learning about a broad array of topics. They will also have the ability to frame articles and write sparkling display copy, as well as experience developing trusting relationships with reporters and fellow editors.

In your cover letter, discuss your prior experience and why you want to grow as an editor.

These are in-office positions and include regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. You may be required to work some nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Responsibilities:ย

  • Edit articles from desks across the newsroom, including breaking news and features
  • Participate in training seminars designed for the residency, and receive regular feedback
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom on different stories and story forms
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least two years of professional journalism experience outside of school publications and internships. Journalists with more than seven years of experience will not be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Solid news judgment, and a firm grasp of grammar and fact-checking
  • Professional experience editing and assigning news articles

You must be authorized to work in the United States. We will not sponsor work visas for the residency.

The program's goal is to train the next generation of editors for the broader industry. There is no guarantee of a full-time position upon the program's completion. We will offer support to editors in their search for full-time opportunities.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. Eastern time on Sept. 8.

We cannot accept applications that are mailed or emailed to us. We will contact you for interviews as needed, and finalists must take an editing test. This cohort is estimated to begin in late January and end in early 2029.
