Job description

Hearst Connecticut Media Group's journalists cover communities all over the state, serving readers across platforms, including our sites like CTInsider.com, our app, newsletters, social media accounts and more for 10 daily and 21 weekly newspapers.ย 

We're looking for an enterprising, audience-focused and collaborative Multimedia Editor who will be responsible for editing daily videos on tight deadlines as well as occasional larger enterprise projects. They will work closely with the audience staff and reporters and editors across the newsroom to assign or create video content that will reach millions of viewers. This role represents our desire to continue to push the boundaries of traditional visual storytelling.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Edit video from reporters and photographers into polished one- to three-minute videos, sometimes under tight deadlines
  • Work closely with newsroom leaders to ensure key stories get the best visual treatment, including photos
  • Populate a daily schedule of expected incoming video clips and communicate any changes to the audience staff
  • Understand the topics that can work well for social video and ensure those opportunities are pursued, lending a hand with editing as needed
  • Research, pitch and produce original videos that are both informative and entertaining
  • Optimize videos across platforms by demonstrating a strong understanding of engagement tactics and search engine optimization. This includes titles, thumbnails, metadata and more.ย 
  • Communicate effectively and collaboratively across departments during breaking and planned news eventsย 
  • Analyze and interpret metrics and use them to inform real-time and long-term coverage decisions
  • Help build and maintain a library of video assets
  • Participate in news meetings to learn how stories take shape and better understand which audiences we're trying to reach

Qualifications:ย 

  • Experience editing digital media, preferably in a newsroom environment

  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to shoot high-quality and raw video if necessary

  • Deep understanding of social video editing for platforms like Instagram and YouTube Shorts - you can take various raw clips and make a truly fascinating video

  • Quick, organized, technical problem solver able to consistently meet deadlines

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in journalism, English, communications or related field preferredย 

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule for breaking news and special content opportunities

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with a proven ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks
