How much do full time data science intern jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for full time data science intern in the United States is $22.50, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $24.52 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Data Science Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Data Science Intern, you need a solid background in statistics, programming (typically Python or R), and a relevant academic degree such as in computer science, mathematics, or data science. Familiarity with data analysis tools like Pandas, NumPy, SQL, and visualization libraries, as well as experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow), is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a collaborative attitude help interns effectively analyze data and present findings to teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering actionable insights, contributing to projects, and learning quickly in a fast-paced, data-driven environment.

What does a Full Time Data Science Intern do?

A Full Time Data Science Intern typically works with experienced data scientists to analyze large sets of data, build models, and generate insights that help guide business decisions. Their tasks often include data cleaning, exploratory data analysis, assisting in the development of machine learning models, and communicating findings to team members. The role provides hands-on experience with data tools and programming languages such as Python or R, and exposes interns to real-world data challenges. This position is ideal for students or recent graduates looking to gain practical experience in data science.

Is 30 too late for data science?

Full Time Data Science Intern roles are often targeted at students or early-career individuals, but age is not a strict barrier. Many professionals transition into data science later in their careers by acquiring relevant skills such as programming, statistics, and machine learning through online courses or certifications. Success depends on your skills, experience, and ability to demonstrate your value, regardless of age.

Is $30 an hour good for an internship?

For a full-time data science intern, $30 an hour is considered above average in many regions and reflects competitive compensation for entry-level technical roles. Internships often pay between minimum wage and $20-$25 per hour, so $30 indicates a higher-than-average rate, especially if the role involves skills like programming, data analysis, or machine learning. However, pay can vary based on location, company size, and industry standards.

How much does a data science intern make?

A data science intern typically earns between $15 and $30 per hour, depending on the company, location, and level of experience. Internships often last 10 to 12 weeks and may include additional benefits such as mentorship and skill development in tools like Python or R.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Full Time Data Science Intern expect during their internship?

As a Full Time Data Science Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects such as data cleaning, exploratory data analysis, and building or testing predictive models under the guidance of experienced data scientists. Interns often collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering and product management, to translate business problems into analytical solutions. You may also participate in team meetings, present findings, and contribute to the implementation of data-driven recommendations. This exposure helps interns develop technical skills, gain real-world experience, and understand the workflow of a professional data science team.

What is the 80 20 rule in data science?

In data science, the 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto principle, suggests that roughly 80% of the results come from 20% of the efforts or data. Data scientists often focus on the most impactful features or data subsets to improve model performance efficiently.

Job description

Stanford Rebele Data Science Internship, Summer 2026

At Hearst Newspapers, data drives the way we engage millions of readers across our publications. We're looking for an ambitious intern to join our Data and Insights team, where you'll tackle real-world challenges in digital media, audience growth, and storytelling at scale.

This internship is paid through the Stanford Rebele Internship Program. To be eligible, candidates must be current Stanford University students.

This internship will run from June 8 to August 14, 2026, and can be based in either California or New York.

This is an opportunity to shape strategic decisions by translating complex data into powerful insights. You'll work cross-functionally with newsrooms, marketing, and audience teams to help the business understand how audience development drives outcomes for the business. You'll help to answer questions like, "Do TikTok followers views lead to business outcomes", "What platforms attract our most valuable audiences?", "How do our users engage and interact with our investigative data-journalism projects, and does that engagement ultimately result in business outcomes".

You will work directly with both technical and non-technical users to translate business questions into data problems that our data can solve. That work will involve building ad-hoc reports and dashboards, conducting exploratory analysis, and modeling data to help solve business problems.

Working within the larger Data and Insights team, you will be collaborating with other analysts, data scientists, and data engineers to understand how a business intelligence team functions in a media organization as you learn to hone your data skills.

What You'll Gain
Hands-on experience working with BigQuery, Python, and large-scale datasets.
A front-row seat to the inner workings of a modern media company at the intersection of data and journalism.
The opportunity to present your findings to senior stakeholders - your insights will directly influence strategy.

Qualifications
Pursuing a degree in math, engineering, statistics, econometrics, data science or related quantitative field at Stanford University
Prior experience or internship with data analysis (as an analyst, in analytics, business intelligence or similar)
Familiarity with SQL (BigQuery preferred)
Familiarity with Python for data analysis
Strong verbal and written communication, especially when presenting to non-technical stakeholders

This is your chance to leave a mark on one of the largest digital news organizations in the country. If you're excited about data, media, and real-world impact, we'd love to hear from you!

HNP Overview:
