What is a full time core lab?

A Full Time Core Lab position typically refers to a laboratory professional who works in a hospital or clinical setting's Core Laboratory on a full-time basis. The Core Lab is responsible for performing a wide range of routine and specialized diagnostic tests, including hematology, chemistry, immunology, and urinalysis, which are essential for patient care. Employees in this role may include medical technologists, laboratory technicians, or scientists who are trained to operate advanced lab instruments, analyze results, and ensure quality control. Full-time roles usually require working 36-40 hours per week, and may involve shifts outside of standard business hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time core lab technician?

To thrive as a Full Time Core Lab Technician, you need a solid background in clinical laboratory science, typically with an associate or bachelor's degree in medical technology or a related field and relevant certification (such as ASCP). Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), automated analyzers, and quality control protocols is essential. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for ensuring accurate test results and collaborating with healthcare teams. These skills are vital for maintaining laboratory accuracy, regulatory compliance, and supporting timely patient diagnosis and care.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in a full time core lab environment?

Professionals in a Full Time Core Lab often encounter challenges such as handling high sample volumes, maintaining accuracy under time constraints, and adapting to rapidly changing laboratory technology. Collaboration with other departments, such as nursing and medical staff, is crucial for ensuring timely and accurate test results. Additionally, staying updated on proper safety protocols and quality control procedures is essential for minimizing errors and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

The Echo Core Lab has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research fellow.

The Echocardiography (Echo) Core Lab is a core laboratory of the Cardiovascular Research Center. The Echo Core Lab offers third-party interpretation of echocardiographic studies for clinical trials around the world, partnering as a research collaborator with trial investigators and industry sponsors. In particular, the Echo Core Lab provides echocardiography measurements for clinical investigations and trials that use echocardiography for patient eligibility or study endpoints or both.

Utilizing Mayo Clinic's wealth of experience and standing as the nation's foremost institution for cardiovascular diseases and echocardiography, Mayo Clinic cardiologists provide rapid, reliable and reproducible readings with unparalleled quality assurance.

Rapid. A staff of dozens of physicians and sonographers allows the Echo Core Lab to provide a timely turnaround for even the largest trials. The Echo Core Lab can accommodate clinical trials ranging in size from hundreds of studies to several thousand studies with speed and precision.

Reliable. Mayo Clinic is the premier center for echocardiography in the world, performing upward of 250 examinations a day. Since its inception in 1999, the Echo Core Lab has published more than 1,000 papers on the subject of echocardiography. Many Echo Core Lab faculty and staff have participated in writing echocardiography guidelines. The Echo Core Lab holds regular quality assurance meetings to standardize echocardiography measurements and interpretation.

Reproducible. Clinical trials that use echocardiography require the highest caliber of objective interpretation for optimal results - results that can be reproduced and confirmed by investigators and the scientific community. Mayo Clinic's stringent quality control procedures provide a database of precise readings on which to base research conclusions.

Preferred experience includes expertise in echocardiographic imaging and interpretation. A Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic is a temporary position intended to provide training and education in research. Individuals will train in the research program of Drs. Jae K. Oh, Jared G.
