School/Department Information
The Department of Police and Public Safety is responsible for: law enforcement, criminal investigations, parking enforcement, parking fine collection, emergency first response, community policing, security escorts, security surveys, motorist assists, educational presentations, and special event services, among other duties on the campus of UNC School of the Arts.
Primary Description of Work
A law enforcement officer typically performing uniform patrol responsibilities following completion of BLET and attainment of law enforcement officer certification. Eligible for All External Lateral Hires.
Work Schedule and hours
Typically, a 12 hour shift, including every other weekend, does not switch between day and night shifts. Schedule may vary depending upon departmental needs.
Monday thru Friday and some weekends maybe required for the trainee.
The academy is a full-time program conducted over 17 weeks and consists of approximately 680 hours of training. Class sessions are Monday through Friday starting at 8 a.m. with the schedule varying depending on the training topic of the day. Occasional night training is mandated while enrolled in the daytime session.
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
Police Officers are responsible for enforcing state and local laws and UNCSA regulations as they pertain to law enforcement. Employees are empowered with full law enforcement power and are charged with the responsibility of apprehension of criminal offenders, criminal investigation, traffic enforcement and serving of warrants and summons. Officers have jurisdiction on all property that is owned, operated and/or controlled by UNCSA. Officers are responsible for deterring crime, maintaining the peace, and protecting lives and property by such means as high visibility patrol, intervention in criminal acts in progress and investigation of criminal violations.
Officers apply the laws relating to the rights of suspects, search and seizure, maintaining the chain of evidence, arrest authority, and the appropriate use of force. Officers apply the methods, procedures, and practices used in investigation, complaints filed (orally or in writing) and alleged violations of UNCSA regulations, local, state, and federal statutes. Officers apply emergency response principles and techniques; apply skill in the use of firearms, and other equipment used in enforcement and investigative activities, operate communications equipment and DCI equipment.
The officers are able to act quickly and intelligently in emergency situations, effectively carry out oral and written instructions, effectively communicate and deal with the public and representatives of the legal system, prepare routine reports of activities engaged in and incidents investigated, and apply UNCSA regulations, local, state, and federal laws and statutes in investigations. The officers perform other assigned duties as requested by their supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Police Trainee - Minimum of High School diploma or GED. Ability to qualify for attendance at a State of North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Academy including satisfying all relevant background check and physical agility requirements as required by the NC Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC CJETSC) and the hiring agency.
Police Officer I: Positions at this level are entry-level with 0-2 years of experience in law enforcement. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training and be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or have the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
Police Officer II: Positions at this level are fully functioning officers with two or more years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training and have at least a general certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC CJETSC).
Police Officer III: Positions at this level are veteran officers with four or more years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officers. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training and have attained their Intermediate Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC CJETSC).
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience on a University Campus.
High school diploma or GED.
