California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Student Population. Cal Poly Pomona is the number one polytechnic university in the nation for student diversity and economic mobility. Our Center for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (CEMaST) supports K-16 education locally and nationally to increase STEM success and participation for all. The College of Science has approximately 150 full-time faculty, 40 staff, and 4,400 active majors. Department of Mathematics and Statistics:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has over 30 full-time faculty and offers a bachelor's degree in mathematics with two options: pure mathematics/secondary teaching and applied mathematics/statistics. We also offer a master's program with two degrees: one degree with emphases in mathematics education and pure mathematics; and a second degree with options in applied mathematics and statistics. The department currently has approximately 350 undergraduate major students and 50 graduate students, and serves over 5,000 students each semester.

Our majors reflect the overall university student population, with over 50% from underrepresented groups, as well as approximately 40% first generation college students. Position description:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking applicants for an Assistant Professor with expertise in applied mathematics with a preference for those who specialize in nonlinear optimization, the mathematics of machine learning, or stochastic modeling. The faculty member in this position will teach mathematics and/or statistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. It is expected that the new faculty member will engage in scholarly research or grant activity and serve on department, college, and university committees. They also will have the chance to mentor undergraduate research and graduate student master's thesis projects.

Minimum requirements include:

• A Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field (degree must be conferred by the start date of the position)
• University or college teaching experience (e.g., instructor of record, teaching assistant, or similar role) in mathematics
• Evidence of ongoing or potential scholarly research in applied mathematics or a closely related area
• Demonstrated potential to teach upper-division undergraduate and graduate-level applied mathematics courses

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

• Research expertise in applied mathematics, with particular interest in nonlinear optimization, the mathematics of machine learning, or stochastic modeling
• Evidence of excellence in teaching
• Potential for directing Master's thesis students or mentoring undergraduate research
• Potential for contributing to department governance and service
• Evidence of commitment to mentoring first generation college students in the mathematical community

• teaching philosophy statement (2-page max) that addresses Cal Poly Pomona's commitment to excellence in education;

• at least two letters of reference, at least one of which must specifically address teaching;
• the names and contact information for at least three individuals that can serve as references;
• unofficial transcripts (undergraduate and graduate, official transcripts will be required of finalists).
