FIELD SERVICE TECHNICIAN — CAD/AVL Systems (SEPTA Bus Fleet)

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Pay Rate: $25.00 – $30.00 per hour

Important — Shift Flexibility: This position is currently scheduled as a day shift, but the work schedule may be switched to a night shift based on operational needs. Position Summary Field Service Technician needed to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair the complete Computer-Aided Dispatch / Automatic Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) system installed on Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) buses in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The technician will be based at a SEPTA bus depot and will be responsible for servicing the on-board CAD/AVL hardware, software, and related digital and analog electronic subsystems on the assigned fleet. Work includes repairing and troubleshooting assemblies to the module level, performing software and hardware upgrades, and documenting all maintenance efforts. The position typically works under close supervision and direction.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities (Full-Time)

  • Service the full CAD/AVL system on SEPTA buses, including on-board computers, GPS/AVL components, mobile data terminals, radio communications equipment, automatic passenger counters, automated voice annunciation, and other integrated on-board peripherals.
  • Read and interpret complex schematics, engineering drawings, work orders, technical manuals, and specifications.
  • Initialize and determine readiness of CAD/AVL devices and related electronic components for correct operation.
  • Analyze and interpret device operations to diagnose malfunctions; replace spares, troubleshoot faults after isolation, and repair modules to the component level.
  • Perform software and firmware installations, updates, and patches on CAD/AVL systems and related on-board equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate and required service records using the company application.
  • Use general-purpose test equipment, basic hand tools, and special tooling as required. Must know how to utilize a multimeter to perform resistance, voltage, and continuity checks.
  • May order replacement spares and parts from vendor parts list.
  • May serve as Lead and assume additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience as a service technician
  • General knowledge of bus, automotive, and/or vehicle systems
  • Familiarity with CAD/AVL, telematics, or transit on-board systems strongly preferred
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Windows and Office products
  • Proficient in troubleshooting of computer hardware and software
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently/unsupervised
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly
  • Flexibility in shift hours and work schedule, including willingness and ability to work either a day shift (6:00 AM – 4:00 PM) or a night shift if reassigned
  • Strong customer service skills (interfacing with transit agency garage staff and operations personnel)
  • Comfortable working in a bus garage/depot environment
  • Ability to complete all required documentation for repair and maintenance services using the company application
  • 2-year technical education (Associate's degree or equivalent in electronics, IT, or related field)
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
